There was a blowout in the 2025 Blue Diamond Stakes results at Caulfield on Saturday with the Hawkes Racing trained improver Devil Night narrowly denying the field as a $16 outsider in betting on the two-year-old’s feature race this autumn.

The son of Extreme Choice, a $1.4 million buy for Yulong, went around at big odds in this year’s Group 1 $2 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) despite an eye-catching debut doing all the chasing last time out when runner-up to Field Of Play in the Prelude when also underrated by the punters and bookies.

Yet again the Prelude form held up in the juvenile’s classic with the second placed colt improving up to 1200m to break his maiden status with just 0.1 lengths to spare on the line over the Anthony & Sam Freedman trained Listed Talindert Stakes winner Tentyris ($21) who lunged late but just missed out on a career defining win.

Completing the surprise Blue Diamond Stakes trifecta 1.35 lengths off the winner also at double-figures was the third placed Written Tycoon colt Tycoon Star ($17) for Team Hayes.

It was a sensational Blue Diamond Stakes ride by jockey Michael Dee who enjoyed his second success in three years having also won in 2022 aboard Little Brose.

Dee sat just outside the leading filly The Playwright aboard the eventual Blue Diamond champ with Devil Night, now a very valuable stallion prospect for connections, giving a good kick on the turn for home to hold out the fast-finishing Tentyris.

“I thought he’d be in the first four or five and I said to Mick [Dee], ‘don’t overcomplicate it, he’s a lovely horse’,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told Racing.com after the race.

“He’s never been on him but he’s a lovely horse. He does everything right, he’s improved out of sight from his run the other day.

“I know it’s easy to say after the race, but you can ask Vin [Cox] what I said to him. I said, ‘mate, off his track work, he just wins on Saturday but I he’s in a Blue Diamond, so I’m not getting too cocky. In a normal race he’d just win.

“I’m not bagging Mick Dee but he probably could have waited 50 more yards. At the 100m I was screaming ‘where is that winning post!’

“Winners are grinners, and no one ever remembers what margin they win by.”

Devil Night became the fourth Blue Diamond Stakes winner in history to claim the prestigious prize at their second career start.

Sydney’s Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 22 at Rosehill is a potential autumn option now for Devil Night who is at an all-in quote of $21 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
