Five Horse 2021 Ranvet Stakes Field: Addeybb vs Verry Elleegant Again

There may only be a five-horse field for the Ranvet Stakes 2021 this Golden Slipper Day but it remains a high-quality affair not to miss with last year’s quinella – Addeybb and Verry Elleegant – renewing rivalries.

Last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the William Haggas-trained UK raider Addeybb beat home Chris Waller’s star mare Verry Elleegant by a half-length in Rosehill’s Group 1 $700,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and he is tipped to do the same this weekend in the wet.

The son of Pivotal has been outstanding in the 12 months since including his Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) triumph on a Heavy (8) Randwick track next start when also defeating Verry Elleegant, that time by nearly three lengths.

He is back in Australia this weekend having last been seen saluting in Ascot’s Group 1 Champion Stakes over the distance last October and is odds-on at $1.90 in the latest Ranvet Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Rosehill is on the verge of a washout with the course proper at a Heavy (9) on Friday morning and more rain on the radar.

Should racing go ahead, those conditions should suit the outstanding European who is undefeated on Heavy going.

English hoop Tom Marquand continues associations with Addeybb in the highly-spruiked event and the jockey, who has been racing well down under this season, is thrilled to be part of such an intriguing edition of the race.

“These are the races that should be celebrated,” Marquand told the media this week.

“You’ve got two heavyweights coming together and whatever side you come out of it, you can’t help but respect the fact they’re both top-class athletes and clashes are what people want to see.

“We know he’s going to improve on whatever he does Saturday, whether that’s good enough to beat Verry Elleegant that’s another matter altogether.

“But as long as he comes out of this race well into the Queen Elizabeth, that’s the main aim.”

Following very closely on the second line of Ranvet Stakes betting at $2.10, five-year-old Zed mare Verry Elleegant presents as the fit danger again chasing another Group 1 success.

She is a Rosehill specialist with three wins and the Ranvet second from four runs at the track and is another proven Heavy-course performer (3:2-1-0).

Last October she completed the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup Group 1 double in Melbourne and she comes off a second-up victory at Randwick in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over a mile.

The $7.4 million earner will thrive on a wet Rosehill track getting up to 2000m third-up and looks a definite chance to turn the tables on Addeybb here.

Outside the dominant duo the other single-figure hopeful in the Ranvet Stakes markets looking for the upset at $9.50 is the Hawkes Racing-trained Master Of Wine.

The German-bred son of Maxios hasn’t finished in the money since March last year at this track and distance when powering home in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes by three and a half-lengths on a Heavy (10).

He could get the exact same scenario on Saturday, however, will need to be improving on his lead-up sixth in the Chipping Norton to get the better of the two champions in the field.
