Irish galloper Fifty Stars looks well on his way to securing a spot in next fortnight’s $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) following a dramatic win in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.
Third-up following a disappointing finish at Caulfield last month, the $10.00 chance flashed home late to steal a win from fellow stablemate So Si Bon at the line. The Lindsay Park team now hope to draw a Wildcard spot for the All-Star Mile on Monday, while punters can get aboard at $11.00 odds with Ladbrokes.
“He settled down a lot, even when he was first-up he was a different horse” winning jockey Ben Allen said after the race.
“Today I gave him a good stretch just to wake him up going to the gates, and we got a beautiful run in into the race.”
Fifty Stars exploded down the middle on Saturday to win by a nose. He’s now won seven of 11 starts and over $400,000 in prize-money, but while trainer David Hayes was grateful for the former Darren Weir star, he also enjoyed watching So Sin Bon flash home late.
“We’re very lucky to have him, I got just as big a kick out of watching So Si Bon there” Hayes said.
The Doncaster Mile could also be an option for Fifty Stars should he be snubbed a chance at a Wildcard spot. Fifty Stars has firmed from $51.00 into $18.00 for the April 6 race.
