Redzel To Strike First-up in Black Caviar Lightning 2018

Inaugural The Everest winner Redzel is ready to kick off a big autumn racing carnival campaign first-up at Flemington Racecourse in the 2018 Black Caviar Lightning on February 17.

Peter & Paul Snowden’s super sprinter was ultra-impressive at Randwick in mid-October defeating a start-studded field in the Restricted $10 million The Everest (1200m).

After dominating Australia’s richest race, he travelled south to Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and saluted down the famous straight in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

The five-year-old son of Snitzel is now set to return to the track of his latest turf triumph with a resuming run in the Group 1 $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) next month.

Team Snowden chase their maiden success in the weight-for-age feature, while Redzel is out to do the Darley Classic – Black Caviar Lightning Stakes double back-to-back for the first time since champion mare Black Caviar (2011).

Black Caviar went on to win the next two editions of the then Lightning Stakes, a race that is now named in her honour.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden said a public trial was likely for Redzel, a winner of close to $7.8 million in prize money over his 21 start career to date, for next week before the Black Caviar Lightning run.

“He’ll have one trial, maybe next Monday at Rosehill, and then another one at Flemington,” the master trainer told Racing Victoria.

“It should set him up for the 17th for the Lightning.

“1000m down the straight suits him perfect. He loves Flemington. He’s just a brilliant horse, it’ll take a handy one to beat him.”

The remainder of the autumn is wide open for Redzel following the Lightning Stakes, but he will likely be seen in Sydney at Royal Randwick on April 7 during ‘The Championships’ for the Group 1 $2.5 million Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

“Nothing’s locked in [beyond that],” Snowden said.

“The Newmarket’s probably not ideal being a handicap, he’ll just get too much weight.

“You’re looking at 60, 61kg, which makes it pretty hard.

“We’ll have a think of where we go next start.

“Maybe we’ll wait and run in the TJ, I may give him that much time off, we’ll see.”

All-in TJ Smith Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Redzel as the clear $6 early favourite ahead of the Hawkes Racing-trained Chautauqua ($9) who has won the past three editions of the autumn classic.

Redzel is undefeated at Flemington having also won the Listed G.H. Mumm Stakes (1000m) at the track in November of 2016 defeating the 2017 Lighting Stakes winner Terravista.

The Darley Classic win from November 11 was Redzel’s sixth straight success with his last loss being the close second to stablemate Russian Revolution on a Heavy (10) Rosehill track last March in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

The galloper currently boats two Group 1 wins plus The Everest, his first elite level success achieved last May during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m).
