It could be a big day Rosehill Gardens for trainer Gerald Ryan who has the red hot favourite in the Golden Rose Stakes with Menari and also has Washington Heights dominating Shannon Stakes 2017 betting.
Menari is at $2 to take out the day’s feature race – the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) – and stablemate Washington Heights is also short in the markets on the Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Shannon Stakes (1500m) run earlier on the card.
Nine horses remain in Shannon Stakes contention and all the money at Ladbrokes.com.au is on Washington Heights ($3.10) to post his third win from four runs this time in.
The six-year-old son of Commands was last seen beating Dawn Wall in a Benchmark 95 over 1400m at Randwick on September 2 and is out to extend that brilliance stepping up in class and distance.
He comes back from 58.5kg last start to just 55kg on the weekend and Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride on the lightly-raced galloper who has just his 14th career start here and his fourth since returning from a stint in Hong Kong.
The big danger looking at the Shannon Stakes odds is the horse Washington Heights beat home last start, Chris Waller’s mare Dawn Wall at $3.50 to turn the tables.
The four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock was narrowly beaten first-up and comes back from 55kg to 53kg here, but still meets Washington Heights 1.5kg worse in the weights than earlier this month.
She should strip fitter for the resuming run however and has winning form up to a mile she will appreciate the extra 100m here with a gun run from barrier two on the cards for her and hoop Corey Brown.
There has also been a tickle of money come in for Imposing Lass ($6) in the outside barrier, the Bjorn Baker-trained Makfi mare on a short turnaround after a close fifth in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle last Friday.
The five-year-old carried 57kg that race and will enjoy coming right back to Saturday’s 53kg minimum as she chases her first win since the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford back in January.
Rounding out the single-figure hopes in the Shannon Stakes, the winner of which back-up in Saturday week’s Group 1 $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick, are Euro Angel ($7) and Lubiton ($7.50).
Both mares scratched out of the Group 2 $400,000 Golden Pendant (1400m) on the same card in favour of this race.
Euro Angel has finished in the money in both her runs this campaign including a last start third to Deploy in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill a fortnight back.
Lubiton meanwhile won back-to-back races earlier this prep, including Wyong’s Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) defeating Imposing Lass, before her eighth in the Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle.
