Lindsay Park co-trainer David Hayes is leaning towards a start in the $10 The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14 with today’s all the way Memsie Stakes winner Vega Magic.
“There is $10 million up there isn’t there. He would be the logically one for the Rupert Clarke maybe, or The Everest, but I am thinking The Everest,” Hayes said.
With nominal leader Charmed Harmony scratched because of the firm track, winning jockey Craig Williams allowed Vega Magic to set the pace and the $2.25 favourite gave his backers no reason for concern at any stage of the race to record a blistering win in the Group 1 $1m New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Darren Weir’s 2016 Memsie Stakes winner Black Heart Bart ($6) was given a great ride by Brad Rawiller just off the speed but was unable to reel Vega Magic in in the run to the line.
Black Heart Bart’s stablemate Tosen Stardom ($15) was back in favour with the stable running home for third and Weir thinks there is a nice race in him over the Spring Carnival.
Hayes, who trains in partnership with his son Ben Hayes and nephew Tom Dabernig, was very satisfied with the win of Vega Magic who is now undefeated from three starts for the stable since being transferred from Western Australia with his other victories being the Group 1 $1m Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 20 and the Listed $120,000 Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 19.
“I was very worried with the way the wind was blowing today and no horses were leading and winning but he dominated that race,” Hayes said.
“We will have a chat with the owners if we climb Everest or go the weight for age route.”
“Either way where ever he goes, he will be very competitive.”
Vega Magic is listed at $5 for The Everest at Ladbrokes.com.au behind the $4.80 favourite Chautauqua.
