Browne Chases 2017 Ipswich Cup Day Treble

Sunshine Coast-based hoop Damian Browne is hoping to repeat his Ipswich Cup Day results from the past two years coming away with at treble of wins in the 2017 edition of the meeting this weekend.

Browne is notorious for expressing his disdain regarding the travel from Caloundra to Ipswich, but has a remarkable record at the south-west Brisbane track’s premier race meeting.

In 2015 he rode a trio of Ipswich Cup Day winners including Maurus in the marquee race, with Ninth Legion in the Eye Liner Stakes his other black-type win that year.

“I hadn’t ridden at Ipswich for three years before 2015 and yes I did get lost on the way there,” Browne admitted to AAP this week.

He returned last Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and again came away with three pieces of Ipswich Cup Day silverware, headlined by a second straight Eye Liner Stakes success this time on Smokin’ Joey.

On Saturday Browne is locked in for five rides across the nine-race Ipswich card including the last two Listed features on the program.

He may be without a mount in this year’s Ipswich Cup field, but Browne gets the chance at three consecutive victories in the $175,000 Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) and his fourth in total having also partnered the Gerald Ryan-trained Adnocon for his 2011 success.

This winter in the quality handicap sprint he partners the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snippets Land, but has work to do from the outside barrier.

Third-up this weekend, Snippetson six-year-old Snippets Land was last seen running under three lengths back for fifth to Deploy at Doomben in the Group 2 Moreton Cup (1200m) on June 3.

Browne was aboard for that ride and retains the ride on the $21 outside in Eye Liner Stakes betting through Ladbrokes.com.au.

In the last the hoop partners with Godolphin’s top weight Kinshachi (59kg) in the $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) for fillies and mares.

Drawn a treat in barrier three, Commands four-year-old Kinshachi has excellent wet track form with two wins and a second from her three starts on Heavy going to date.

Conditions at Ipswich should suit on Saturday as the mare comes off a close sixth behind subsequent Dane Ripper Stakes placegetter Bonny O’Reilly in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m) on a Good (4) Doomben track a fortnight back.

Kinshachi may be carrying the top kilos, but she is the current $5.50 equal top fancy in Gai Waterhouse Classic betting with I Am Zelady.

Browne’s other mounts are on Barnsley (Race 1), Snitzel Knight (Race 2) and Acceptile (Race 4).

“They all have chances so let’s hope for another treble,” Browne said.
