Chris Waller‘s defending champion Fangirl is favourite to go back-to-back with a successful title defence at Royal Randwick in the lucrative 2025 7 Stakes race on The Shorts Day.

The mile event in its current incarnation runs for the third time on Saturday with the $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) drawing another elite line-up of 11 middle-distance stars.

With a ballot free ride into the Group 1 $1.5 million Epsom Handicap back at the track and trip on October 4 up for grabs, race fans look set for a competitive clash and 7 Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au favours another win by class mare Fangirl at $2.70.

The seven-year-old daughter of Sebring has amassed over $10 million in career earnings and was excellent improving on her 2023 third to win this event 12 months ago.

She runs second-up at her pet track and comes via a very strong form race further south when fourth behind Treasurethe Moment in Caulfield’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

The Memsie form was franked last weekend with the runner-up Mr Brightside becoming history’s first ever three-time Makybe Diva Stakes champion with an upset victory over Aeliana and Via Sistina.

Fangirl won the 7 Stakes from barrier eight last year and is drawn even better in barrier five with James McDonald sticking with.

The challenge to Waller’s super consistent Fangirl taking the cake occupying the second line of betting at $5 is another very good horse in Ceolwulf for Joesph Pride.

A five-year-old son of Tavistock, Ceolwulf won two Group 1 events over the Randwick mile last spring completing the Epsom Handicap – King Charles III Stakes double.

He presents fit this weekend third-up off back-to-back fourths in the Winx Stakes and Chelmsford Stakes and is sure to be right in the frame to feature in the finish again.

Ceolwulf will again be ridden by Chad Schofield from gate three.

The $5.50 third favourite in the current markets is the rails drawn Gringotts for Ciaron Maher.

The Per Incanto gelding beat Fangirl home in Rosehill’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) back in March and has his second spring start following a credible fifth on a Heavy (10) track in the Winx Stakes last month.

He’ll appreciate the mile now and firmer going chasing his fifth win over the distance from seven starts.

Gringotts has been kept fit with a recent Wyong trial when he beat Group 1 Canterbury Stakes winner Royal Patronage on September 8 and he has Tommy Berry sticking in the saddle.

In an open market a further three challengers are also under $10 for the win with Royal Patronage ($6.50) who ran second in the autumn’s Doncaster Mile at the track and trip, Waller’s impressive Chelmsford Stakes champ Lindermann ($8), and the Joe Pride trained dual The Everest placed Private Eye ($8.50).

Private Eye is fit third-up having won the PB Lawrence at Caulfield fresh against a good field before a game last start second to Pericles in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes here on September 6 from a wide draw so could prove the value on the weekend up in grade.

The 2025 7 Stakes is set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:00pm (AEST) on Sydney’s 10-race Saturday card.
