The Listed $300,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m) final field has attracted 13 runners and current favourite at $3.70 through Ladbrokes.com.au is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Zoumon.
Waterhouse & Bott won the race back in 2017 with Supply And Demand, and they return this winter with a genuine hope in the progressive Zoustar four-year-old Zoumon.
The gelding has won six of his 18 starts including most recently a narrow victory in Rosehill’s Listed WJ McKell Cup (2000m).
He rises in weight from 53kg to 54.5kg and is after his win over further than 2050m, but remains a solid favourite third-up and fit well-placed by the stable.
Occupying the second line of Caloundra Cup betting at $4.20 is the Kris Lees-trained top-weight Luncies with 59.5kg.
Jumping from out wide in gate 12 with Andrew Mallyon aboard the consistent Iffrajj six-year-old is proven at the distance.
He comes off a 2400m Eagle Farm win by 2.25 lengths in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2400m) from Tiara Day, but does go up notable in weight having carried just 55kg to victory there.
The run before he was competitive when fourth with 59kg at weight-for-age in the Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) in Brisbane behind Caulfield Cup favourite Without A Fight, so he brings some strong form lines to the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.
In an open edition of the Caloundra Cup a further four runners are also at single-figures including the Chris Waller-trained Desert Icon ($6).
Classy French-bred seven-year-old Desert Icon was a beaten favourite last time out when narrowly beaten home in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) on June 17.
He gets the chance to turn the tables here back up to his preferred distance and rock-hard fit.
The Annabel Neasham-trained Ipswich Cup winner Regal Lion also backs-up in the Caloundra Cup field and pays $8 to complete the Queensland double jumping from barrier two with Ben Thompson aboard on 57kg.
Neasham also saddles-up Bois D’argent ($7.50) at single-figures in gate five with Ryan Maloney to ride the six-year-old grey.
Bois D’argent has been a competitive performer for Neasham since arriving in her care with recent runs including a Gosford Cup third in May and Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) success at Rosehill two back.
The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Declaration Of War six-year-old Warning ($8.50) completes the Caloundra Cup hopes under $10 this season.
The 2019 Victoria Derby champion hasn’t won a race since November of 2021, but he looked close to his better form last time out when second to Selino in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) over the two miles.
The Caloundra Cup 2023 is set to run as Race 6 at 3:23pm (AEST) on Saturday with full markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
