One of two elite level Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival events taking place on the weekend this year’s Group 1 $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) serves as a key lead-up to the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap in a fortnight’s time.
We’ve got a capacity field gathered with the latest Kingsford Smith Cup odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au led by four-year-old So You Think gelding Think About It at $6.
He took his wins to five on the trot last time out at Gosford on May 6 with a narrow victory in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m).
Saturday seems him at his pet distance (5:4-0-1) up notably in grade for both his Brisbane and Group 1 debut run.
Sam Clipperton has the ride on the favourite from barrier eight with Think About It needing to go to another level here with 59kg in a strong Group 1 field.
Occupying the second line of Kingsford Smith Cup betting at a close $6.50 is top local hope Rothfire for Robert Heathcote.
Winner of the Group 1 JJ Atkins as a two-year-old here over the mile in 2020 the now five-year-old son of Rothesay has built a very nice record over the past few years.
He ran fourth in this race last year behind Apache Chase in a blanket finish just a quarter-length beaten before his third in the Stradbroke.
He is third-up this weekend off two nice Eagle Farm lead-ups including success in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 29, and he looks every chance of winning again here from gate seven with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
Equal with the last start Victory Stakes winner at $6.50 is Case Of You in gate six for Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr.
Mark Zahra comes aboard the Hot Streak entire who ran sixth in the Victory before a last start fifth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) behind young superstar Giga Kick at 30/1.
He is being kept much safer in the markets here with the French import boasting winning form up to 1408m overseas and getting accustomed to racing down under now.
Rounding out the single-figure Kingsford Smith Cup hopefuls this season are James Cummings’ early market mover Vilana ($11 into $7) who won the $1 million The Hunter in the spring and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Magic Millions Sprint winner from January King Of Sparta ($8) coming off a narrow second in the Victory Stakes here last month.
The 2023 Kingsford Smith Cup is set to run as Eagle Farm Race 8 at 3:57pm (AEST) with full markets courtesy of Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
