Michael Moroney’s upset Stradbroke Handicap winning mare Tofane will attempt back-to-back elite level wins at Eagle Farm when she lines-up as favourite in Saturday’s Tattersall’s Tiara 2021 field and betting markets.

The in-form daughter of Ocean Park is one of a capacity field of female gallopers engaged in this season’s Group 1 $600,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), which is the final feature of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
A fortnight back Tofane returned to her best form second-up taking out the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap at the same track and distance by a half-length as a $14 outsider in betting.
Craig Williams rode her to the nice victory over Vega One (2nd) and Signore Fox (3rd) and will be in the saddle again on Saturday as the five-year-old looks for another feature race victory.
Tofane rises from 54.5kg in the Stradbroke to 57kg at weight-for-age against her own kind on the weekend, but remains favourite in the post-acceptances Tattersall’s Tiara betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
She is at a current price of $5 to complete the Stradbroke – Tiara double for the first time since Srikandi (2015).
Occupying the second line of Tattersall’s Tiara betting for Saturday at a close $7 is the Godolphin-raced Savatiano prepared by James Cummings.
Cummings’ famous grandfather Bart won the Tiara back in 2009 with Russeting when the event was known as the Winter Stakes and this Saturday James is looking to repeat the feat with talented Street Cry six-year-old Savatiano.
A winner of over $2.58 million in prize money, the mare lines up for her 41st career start in the Tiara and is out to atone for her last start ninth to Vega One in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) back in late May.
She’s been kept fresh since and prior to that was in outstanding form in Sydney winning the Group 2 Expressway Stakes, Group 1 Canterbury Stakes and running second in a photo-finish to Kolding in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over the 1400m.
There was no Tattersall’s Tiara held last year due to COVID-19, but Savatiano ran in the 2019 edition and was good finishing a half-length back third behind that winter’s winner Invincibella from the Waller stable.
Cummings and the Royal Blue brigade will also be represented in the event by Flit ($13).
The four-year-old Medaglia D’Oro mare is being kept safe in betting despite her last start flop in Adelaide’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) when second last (15th) back in early May.
It has been a long time between drinks for the former Thousand Guineas winner whose last victory was in October’s $500,000 Silver Eagle and prior to that the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes in February of 2020.
This year master Sydney-based horseman Chris Waller meanwhile returns chasing his third Tattersall’s Tiara having also prepared the 2013 champion with popular mare Red Tracer.
Waller saddles-up three chances in the Tattersall’s Tiara field in 2021 with Robert Sangster runner-up Subpoenaed ($11) coming off a close Stradbroke fifth, last start Sapphire Stakes winner Nudge ($15) chasing her third Brisbane win on the trot and Madam Rouge ($18) who was just a half-length back third in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) here on June 12.
Other standout Tiara hopefuls include the Dane Ripper Stakes quinella of Brooklyn Hustle and Odeum.
The 2021 Tattersall’s Tiara barrier draw will be released at 9:30am (AEST) on Wednesday morning.
