There was a huge boilover in the 2021 Rough Habit Plate results on Doomben 10,000 Day with the locally-trained roughie Criminal Defence doing it easy at big odds to win the Group 3 on way to this winter’s Queensland Derby.
Going around as a $71 outsider in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au in the Group 3 $250,000 Rough Habit Plate (2000m), Nicconi gelding Criminal Defence was given a beautiful run in transit by Michael Rodd from a wide alley and ran over them late in a commanding performance.
The Peter & Will Hulbert-trained chestnut hadn’t won a race since November last year at the Sunshine Coast and was up in both class and distance for the Rough Habit.
Making his Group race debut, the horse relished a rise to 2000m showing nice improvement off a last start fifth over 1845m at Eagle Farm from earlier in the month.
Rodd had the eventual winner settled up closer to the speed as Sagacious led the field around.
Once on the home straight, Criminal Defence shot into the clear and took off going on to beat the Chris Waller-trained duo Kukeracha ($5.50) and Senor Toba ($3.10), the third placegetter making up all the ground from the back of the field.
Co-trainer Will Hulbert has had Criminal Defence pegged as a Derby horse from the start and the galloper went a long way in proving him right in the traditional lead-up.
“Can’t believe it,” he told the media post-win.
“I told anyone that would listen for the last six months that he’s a Derby horse so that’s where we’re going.
“He looked pretty happy in running, just switched off beautifully.
“He’s not really bred to stay, but he raced like a stayer and he looks like a stayer so we thought we’d have a crack.”
It is now onwards and upwards to Eagle Farm on May 29th for a shot at the Group 1 $600,000 Queensland Derby (2400m).
Criminal Defence is looking to complete the Rough Habit – Queensland Derby double for the first time since Dark Dream (2018).
Before the Rough Habit, Criminal Defence was at $101 in all-in Queensland Derby 2021 odds but has now firmed notably into $26 with full markets available here courtesy of Ladbrokes.com.au.
