Last year’s quinella of UK raider Addeybb and Chris Waller’s brilliant mare Verry Elleegant are dominating the updated Ranvet Stakes 2021 field and odds for the postponed Slipper Day meeting this weekend in Sydney.
The Golden Slipper Stakes Day card was called off last Saturday due to heavy rainfall and an unsafe racing surface at Rosehill Gardens and postponed seven days.
With the rain now cleared, the track is currently rated a Heavy (9) and it looks all systems go for the meeting this weekend.
One of the key support acts on the card is the Group 1 $700,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) featuring the highly anticipated renewal of the Addeybb and Verry Elleegant rivalry.
The duo ran one-two respectively in last year’s Ranvet Stakes results as well as in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during ‘The Championships’, with Verry Elleegant also winning the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) in between.
After originally only drawing five final acceptors, the Ranvet Stakes field is up to nine runners on Saturday and markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have the William Haggas-trained international Addeybb on top at $2.10.
He is out to go back-to-back in the weight-for-age classic for the first time since Theseo (2009-10) and is drawn a treat in barrier five with the in-form Tom Marquand, the hoop racing well down under this autumn, in the saddle.
Addeybb is undoubtedly one of the best horses racing anywhere in the world and his first-up record is commanding.
He looks well rated here fresh with five months between his Group 1 Champion Stakes win over this distance at Ascot last October and his Ranvet Stakes title defence here.
The son of Pivotal gets his pet distance with conditions to suit and will take the power of beating back in Australia.
The danger again is obviously Verry Elleegant who has only improved since she last autumn when she was twice defeated by the English champion.
A now five-year-old daughter of Zed, she is a Rosehill specialist with three wins and the Ranvet second from four starts at the track and is also gets up over a more suitable distance third-up here.
During the spring she was dominant completing the Turnbull Stakes – Caulfield Cup double and was last seen winning Randwick’s Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over a mile in late February.
She will relish the wet track and 2000m here with fitness on her side, but jockey James McDonald will need a touch of luck from the inside alley in these conditions aboard the $2.80 second elect.
There is one other contender under $10 in the latest Ranvet Stakes odds for Saturday with early money coming for the Godolphin-raced Colette into $6.
Hugh Bowman comes aboard the flying four-year-old daughter of Hallowed Crown who relished a Heavy (9) Rosehill track in the spring to win the $7.5 million Golden Eagle.
The James Cummings-trained mare has come back in the same rich vein of form winning first the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), where Verry Elleegant ran third, before a Chipping Norton second and last start fourth only a length off Toffee Tongue in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) on March 13.
