Undefeated Kiwi raider Aegon stamped himself as a proper racehorse in his down under debut on Saturday, the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained galloper running the ideal 2021 Randwick Guineas trial with his Group 2 $400,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) win in Sydney.
Sacred Falls gelding Aegon came into the Hobartville Stakes field at Rosehill Gardens having won his opening four career starts across the Tasman including the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) last November.
After opening early favourite to salute, he had eased out to $4.80 before the jump, but proved to be in a class of his own with a nearly two length victory over the Hawkes Racing-trained North Pacific ($3.40).
In an absolutely ace ride by jockey Hugh Bowman, the hoop was able to race right up the centre between horses when the gap opened late on the home straight aboard the striking New Zealander to easily account for the locals ahead of bigger races this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The favourite Peltzer, coming off a first-up Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes win, flew out the gates in the Hobartville to take up an easy lead as Prime Star did the chasing on his outside in second.
North Pacific was well-positioned on their outside fourth throughout, while Bowman bid his time midfield in a genuinely run race.
Peltzer was held together around the turn, North Pacific pulling out to give chase at the 300m, but it was Aegon up the middle who proved superior.
The visitor went straight up the centre, charged to the lead the final 100m and shot to the top of the all-in markets for the upcoming Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas (1600m) over the mile on March 6.
Behind North Pacific, who stuck on well for second, the Richard & Michael Freedman-trained Prime Star was enormous in third – his fifth placing on the trot after the last start $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) second first-up at Randwick.
Peltzer meanwhile faded late to run nearly three lengths back fourth as the beaten favourite, his Rosehill hoodoo continuing.
The Hobartville Stakes has been a gun guide to the Randwick Guineas in recent years with the likes of Dissident (2014), Hallowed Crown (2015), Kementari (2018) and The Autumn Sun (2019) all completing the double.
Updated pre-field Randwick Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au have Aegon into $2.70 favouritism to be the next and can be accessed in full here.
