The opening leg of the coveted Spring Cups double, the Group 1 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) headlines the racing action at Caulfield on October 17, the same day as Sydney’s $15 million The Everest at Randwick.

Despite COVID-19 and its restrictions, it is shaping up as a stellar edition of the Caulfield Cup in 2020 with the latest acceptances for the world’s richest mile and a half handicap led by the Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant.

The brilliant daughter of Zed is allocated 55kg in the Caulfield Cup weights and was last seen carrying a half-kilo more than that to a very gutsy victory in Flemington’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

She’s proven over the 2400m having won her two previous runs over the distance and presents fit fourth-up in the event for Waller who chases his maiden Caulfield Cup victory.

Along with Verry Elleegant Waller also four other second acceptors still in the mix including Toffee Tongue and Finche who ran second and third respectively behind their star stablemate in the Turnbull trifecta.

Verry Elleegant sits equal top of the all-in Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $7 along with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish raider Anthony Van Dyck.

There is a total of nine international raiders still in contention led by O’Brien’s Galileo entire Anthony Van Dyck, last year’s English Derby champion coming off a Group 2 win over the 2400m at Longchamp from September 13.

The talented stayer is the 58.5kg Caulfield Cup top-weight but remains a favourite in the markets.

Among the other standout raiders are Buckhurst for Melbourne Cup winning trainer Joseph O’Brien, Charlie Fellowes’ regular Spring Cups performer down under Prince Of Arran and the Andrew Balding-trained Dashing Willoughby.

Along with Verry Elleegant the other Group 1 winner from last weekend’s racing among the Caulfield Cup second acceptors is the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Mirage Dancer who took out Randwick’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).

The now seven-year-old was third in the Caulfield Cup results last year and, after handing his sire Frankel a maiden Australian Group 1 success with the Epsom Day victory, will be out to go two better this season.

Beaten The Metropolitan favourite Mugatoo ran second in that 2400m showdown and could get the chance to turn the tables with trainer Kris Lees paying second acceptances for the Caulfield Cup.

The most notable withdrawal meanwhile was the Danny O’Brien-trained Russian Camelot who instead heads to The Valley on October 24 for the $5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).

The final 2020 Caulfield Cup acceptances close at 3:00pm (AEDT) on Wednesday October 14, 2020.
