Caulfield Cup 2020 First Acceptances: 87 Stayers Still In The Mix

Eighty-seven of the world’s best stayers are still in contention for the Group 1 $5.15 million Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) following first acceptances for the October 17 classic this spring.

Racing Victoria took the first round of declarations for the 2020 Caulfield Cup on Tuesday with numbers up on 2019 when 74 hopefuls were paid up for at the same stage.

In late August there were 177 horses nominated for the first leg of the coveted Spring Cups double, that number cut by 90 this week.

Heading the latest Caulfield Cup 2020 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Danny O’Brien-trained Orderofthegarter.

The lightly-raced Galileo seven-year-old earned a ballot free ride into the Caulfield Cup field via a win in last weekend’s Group 3 Naturalism Stakes when given a peach of a ride by Damien Oliver.

The horse is at $10 to win the world’s richest 2400m handicap and has been penalised a kilo for his Group 3 success taking him up to 51kg in the Caulfield Cup weights.

At the light-weight, jockey Jye McNeil has been confirmed as the Caulfield Cup rider for Orderofthegarter.

Joining Orderofthegarter in the first acceptances are his gun stablemates Russian Camelot – all-in favourite for the $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate – and last year’s Melbourne Cup hero Vow And Declare.

There are a dozen international Caulfield Cup first acceptors looking to continue the gun run of the raiders following back-to-back wins by the visitors in 2018 (Best Solution) and 2019 (Mer De Glace).

Ace Irish horseman Aidan O’Brien dominates the international first acceptance list with his Epsom Derby champ Anthony Van Dyck, Armory, reigning Mackinnon Stakes winner at Flemington Magic Wand and Santiago.

O’Brien’s Melbourne Cup winning son Joseph O’Brien has four Caulfield Cup first acceptors including Master Of Reality who ran fourth in the ‘race that stops a nation’ last year.

From the UK, Charlie Fellows’ regular Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival performer Prince Of Arran is the best known.

One-time favourite for Hawkes Racing Master Of Wine ($11) and Chris Waller’s three-time Group 1 winning mare Verry Elleegant ($11) are considered the dangers occupying the second line of pre-field Caulfield Cup markets.

Among the notable non-acceptors were Godolphin’s ATC Oaks winner Colette and favourite to take out the 2020 Melbourne Cup Surprise Baby who is likely to contest the Cox Plate in the lead-up to a second shot at the ‘Loving Trophy’.

The Caulfield Cup 2020 second acceptances are open until midday (local time) on Tuesday October 6, 2020.
