David Jolly’s Group 1 performer Behemoth is tipped for a winning return at Morphettville this weekend leading betting on the SAJC’s Spring Stakes 2020.
A weight-for-age sprint that has proven a key lead-up into the interstate spring majors in recent years, this season’s Group 3 $120,000 Spring Stakes (1200m) has attracted a top-class field of 12.
Sitting top of the Spring Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.70 and firming to win first-up is All Too Hard five-year-old Behemoth.
Chasing his first win since the Listed Penny Edition Stakes just under 12 months ago, the gelding has caught the eye in two very tough runs since including a fourth under two lengths beaten by Kolding in Rosehill’s $7.5 million Golden Eagle (1500m) in November.
A Group 2 second behind Jungle Edge in May’s Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) followed off a lengthy break before his last start fourth when 2.3 lengths off the winner Trekking in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.
He returns to that track and distance on Saturday facing a much easier class of rivals and has won a recent August trial over 1000m to bring him on fitness-wise.
Occupying the second line of Spring Stakes betting at $3.90 is the returning champion Dalasan drawn the outside alley as he looks to go back-to-back in the race for the first time since Hero Wind (1994-95).
Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas prepare the highly-rated Dalakhani entire who has a formidable record at the Morphettville track with four wins and a second from his five previous starts.
A noted first-up performer (3:2-0-1), he may have run second last time out in the Group 1 SA Derby over 2500m to Cups fancy Russian Camelot, but his record over the shorter sprint distance of the Spring Stakes is also solid (3:2-0-1).
Having won over $2.1 million in just 15 career starts, Dalasan won Flemington’s Group 2 Danehill Stakes after his Spring Stakes success last season and has also been competitive in plenty of Melbourne Group 1 races.
Add in his $5 million The All-Star Mile fifth to Regal Power when only 1.5 lengths beaten in the autumn, and he is by far the class horse and value pick in Saturday’s race.
Outside the top two fancies there are two further single-figure chances in the markets with Kemalpasa ($5.50) and Dalasan’s stablemate Extra Time ($8.50) carrying just 51.5kg.
Local Magnus gelding Kemalpasa has a brilliant record at the track and distance (6:2-3-1) and proved his class during last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival winning the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight in November.
A versatile sprinter he went on to run fourth in the Gold Coast’s $1 million Magic Millions Sprint in January and is out to atone for his flat eighth behind Group 1 winner Gytrash in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes back in April.
He looked improved when second to Behemoth in a recent heat and is being kept safe in betting.
Extra Time meanwhile will be flying with the light weight on the weekend, the Shooting To Win three-year-old having just his fifth career start.
He broke his maiden status at the track in mid-May with a powerhouse performance in the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) saluting by over three lengths and is more than up to this coming right back from 57.5kg that race.
