2020 Warrnambool Cup Field & Odds: Too Close The Sun Hot Favourite

Lindsey Smith’s in-form Terang Cup winner Too Close The Sun is the clear favourite in Warrnambool Cup 2020 betting to continue his winning streak this Wednesday at ‘The Bool’.

The ever popular Listed $225,000 Warrnambool Cup (2350m) steals the show in the midweek feature on Victoria’s south-west coast this week with a dozen stayers accepted into the field.

Sitting top of the latest Warrnambool Cup odds through Ladbrokes.com.au at $3 to make it three wins on the trot is Carlton House four-year-old Too Close The Sun.

The gelding is drawn just worse than midfield in barrier nine for jockey Declan Bates who retains the ride having saluted on the horse by two and a half lengths last time out in the Terang Cup (2150m).

Too Close The Sun looks well suited to the extra metres this weekend having also recently carried a hefty 60kg to victory over 2040m at The Valley for a nearly four length win this autumn.

The Warrnambool Cup favourite faces tougher company in the Black-Type feature on Wednesday, but the bookies are taking no chances based on his excellent lead-up form.

It looks a wide-open affair after the top elect with a host of other runners at single-figures including co $7 second elects Sin To Win and Declares War drawn in barriers seven and two respectively.

The Lindsay Park stable won last year’s race with Furrion (2019) and their three-horse assault on this season’s Warrnambool Cup field is dominated by the Kiwi-bred Sin to Win.

Damien Oliver partners the Sir Percy seven-year-old, a proven stayer with winning form up to two miles, whose lead-up run produced and eye-catching second from out wide at Flemington over 2600m on ANZAC Day.

The veteran hasn’t won a race since the Listed Ramsden Stakes (3200m) in May of 2018, but there’s money for the early market mover to break the drought at Warrnambool on Wednesday.

Matt Cumani saddles-up Declaration Of War gelding Declares War with ace hoop Craig Williams in the saddle, the horse looking for his first win over further than 2000.

The other Lindsay Park runners in the mix meanwhile are Ventura Storm who carries the equal 62kg topweight in the race and Neufbosc who is also high up the weights and ratings with 61kg.

The duo is drawn in barriers four and three respectively and both come off a number of unplaced lead-up runs and the heavy weights and less than ideal recent form have Ventura Storm at $51 and Neufbosc at $61.

The other horse allocated 62kg in the Warrnambool Cup weights this autumn is the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Inverloch who is being kept safe in betting at $7.50.

An ultra-consistent son of Fastnet Rock, the six-year-old has run first or second in his five latest starts and was last seen carrying 56.5kg to victory in Caulfield’s Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) on April 11.

No doubt the likely on-speed performer will run another big race and his lead-up form has been outstanding, but Inverloch will need to be at his best going up notably in weight for this.

Other notable hopes include the rails-drawn Mirimar ($7) who beat Inverloch to win over 2400m at Caulfield in the mud last month, Terang Cup fourth placegetter The Black Leopard ($9) in gate 12 for trainer Henry Dwyer and the Chris Waller-trained Pierro mare Gayatri ($9.50) to be ridden by Luke Nolen of Black Caviar fame.
