2020 Hobart Cup Results: Toorak Affair Leads All-Tasmanian Trifecta

It was an all-Tasmanian trifecta in Sunday’s Hobart Cup 2020 results led by the favourite Toorak Affair who finally broke the Trinder family’s hoodoo in the time-honoured race.

Veteran Spreyton-based trainer Michael Trinder was full of post-race praise for the stable’s successful Toorak Toff mare who saluted for the punters in the Group 3 $250,000 Ladbrokes Hobart Cup (2400m).

It is a race Trinder’s father Ray had been trying to win for many years, and the effortless one and a half length win by the progressive six-year-old could not have been more impressive.

“I’m very proud for my late father (Ray), we tried for many, many years to win a Hobart Cup,” Trinder, 70, said post win on Sunday.

“Good horses make you into great judges and she’s certainly done that.

“I’ve only been there for the ride, she’s done all the work.

“I would like to thank my son Adam, he’s been a great help behind the scenes.”

Ridden to victory by Anthony Darmanin, the $50,000 buy from the 2015 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale took her prize money up over $350,000 with her 12th career win at start number 35.

Beating home fellow local’s Shady Hustle ($14) in second and Glass Warrior ($15) in third, Toorak Affair has also now won her last three races continuing a good rise through the staying ranks.

The best over the line for the interstate visitors in fourth was the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Taikomochi ($3.70) who crossed under two lengths off the winner as the close second favourite in betting.

The winning streak began at Launceston over 2100m on January 18, before her Hobart Cup lead-up winning the Summer Cup (2200m) on February 1.

Backing-up inside of a week, the gun mare showed she was up to the class and 2400m distance.

She is now likely to chase the $100,000 Tasmanian Cups double bonus on offer should she also win the $250,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) back over the mile and a half on February 26.

“I always go one race at a time. I’ll let the dust settle, enjoy the moment and make my plans later in the week,” Trinder said.
