Chris Waller’s The Everest flop Arcadia Queen is tipped to return to form getting back up to her better distance for the inaugural running of the country’s second richest race – the $7.5 million Golden Eagle in Sydney on Saturday.
Last start the daughter of Pierro was one of the best-backed runners in the $14 million The Everest (1200m).
The 1200m was too sharp for the Perth expat however and Arcadia Queen finished second last (11th) behind her gun young stablemate, three-year-old champion Yes Yes Yes.
She now takes to the Rosehill track for the first running of the Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-olds and third-up over the distance looks ideal.
As a filly Arcadia Queen annihilated her rivals by 4.5 lengths in WA’s Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes (1800m) before a first-up win at Rosehill in mid-September’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).
With The Everest behind her she is now the firming $2.80 favourite in The Golden Eagle betting at Ladbrokes.com.au with James McDonald aboard from a gun barrier five draw.
The Golden Eagle 2019 field is down to 16 runners after Waller withdrew his widely-drawn chance Zousain (12).
Along with the best in betting, the star Sydney-based horseman will also be represented in the Golden Eagle by the in-form Kolding drawn one closer to the rails in barrier four.
Big race specialist Glen Boss rides the $5.50 chance as the son of Ocean Park backs up off his narrow victory in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 5.
In the Epsom Kolding carried just 50.5kg to victory and it is a notable rise up to 57.5kg on Saturday.
Still he looks a genuine winning hope again with the Epsom form franked when runner-up Te Akau Shark rounded out last weekend’s Group 1 Cox Plate trifecta finishing third behind champion Japanese raider Lys Gracieux.
Kolding has also won a subsequent Rosehill trial to keep him fit and firing ahead of Saturday’s feature race.
A further three hopefuls are under $10 to become history’s first Golden Eagle winner including Brutal ($5) who suffered an early blow drawing the extreme outside barrier.
Jockey Tommy Berry continues his association on the consistent Team Hawkes-trained O’Reilly stallion, winner of the autumn’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) as a three-year-old lightweight earlier in the year.
Brutal won the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) first-up this spring carrying 58.5kg to victory before his close third when a quarter-length beaten as the odds-on favourite in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m).
He should appreciate getting back up to 1500m here but needs luck from the barrier.
The Everest sixth placedgetter Classique Legend ($7.50) drawn the rails and the flying Silver Eagle winner The Inevitable ($9.50) in gate three round out the single-figure chances in the Golden Eagle odds.
