Godolphin galloper Home Of The Brave remains on track for a shot at the Stradbroke Handicap 2019 at Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 8 despite being scratched from last weekend’s Kingsford-Smith Cup.
James Cummings’ Starspangledbanner seven-year-old was scratched from the weight-for-age Group 1 $700,000 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) on Friday afternoon due to a slight elevation in his temperature.
Connections have since confirmed the import, who won last September’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Randwick, has fully recovered and will continue onto the Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) Saturday week.
Home Of The Brave proved his fitness on Tuesday morning saluting in a 1000m trial at Deagon in Brisbane with Larry Cassidy flying home in the hit-out aboard the galloper by 4.5 lengths.
Nominations for Doomben’s Queensland Oaks Day have Home Of The Brave entered for the Group 2 $200,000 Moreton Cup (1200m).
Nacim Dilmi from the Godolphin stable however confirmed on the radio this week that the horse would be kept fresh for the big one on Stradbroke Handicap Day after commenting on the flash trial form from Tuesday.
“We asked Larry to give him a good trial without overdoing it and he was very happy with him,” Dilmi said.
“He ran a very slick time and Larry said he had plenty left going to the post.
“He quickly led in the trial, within 100m he was straight to the front.
“The horse travelled strongly and did it comfortably.”
All-in markets on Queensland’s richest race at Ladbrokes.com.au are dominated by the Tony Pike-trained The Bostonian ($5), the galloper having completed the Doomben 10,000 – Kingsford-Smith Cup double last weekend.
A roughie in the first of those Group 1 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival events, the son of Jimmy Choux flew under the radar again in the Kingsford-Smith Cup before a gun ride by Michael Cahill saw him take top billing once more.
The Bostonian will carry the 57kg topweight in the Stradbroke Handicap, with the non-acceptance of Osborne Bulls (58kg), after weights were announced on Monday morning.
Home Of The Brave meanwhile has been allocated 56kg and is at $11 in pre-field Stradbroke Handicap odds.
This winter’s Stradbroke Handicap field could feature up to four Godolphin horses.
Home Of The Brave could possibly to be joined in the mix by lightweight Lonhro colt Encryption (52kg) who ran ninth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup, last start Ortensia Stakes winner at Scone Viridine (53.5kg) who is also Moreton Cup nominated for Saturday and Trekking (54kg).
Trekking at $8 currently occupies the second line of futures Stradbroke Handicap betting following the Street Cry four-year-old’s Kingsford-Smith Cup third.
2019 Stradbroke Handicap first acceptances close at 11am (AEST) on Wednesday making now the perfect time to check out the current markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
