Godolphin looks to have another pair of horses headed to next weekend’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m).
Two-year-old filly Kiamichi won the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) on Saturday at Rosehill, earning the winning stable their seventh runner in the time-honoured race.
The Magic Night Stakes, one of two final lead up races ahead of next Saturday’s Slipper, saw Godolphin accept three hopefuls, all of which finished inside the Top 4.
Kiamichi entered at double-digit odds, while race favourite Athiri ran third. Fellow stablemate Amercement finished fourth in a big showing for trainer James Cummings on the heavy track.
Kiamichi will now join Tenley ($6.50), Microphone ($7.50), Lyre ($10.00) among a number of other chances for Godolphin next week. Stable representative Darren Beadman couldn’t be happier with the position the team is in.
“It’s a wonderful position to be in to have a selection of horses in the Slipper” Beadman said after the race.
As for the plan ahead, Beadman has no doubt Kiamichi can run a strong race in the Slipper following a strong showing on a wet track.
“She makes her own luck, obviously if Godolphin do head that way with her, she won’t have to be doing much, it’s a very wonderful position to be in.”
While some might view Athiri running third as a little disappointing, it’s worth keeping in mind the two-year-old has had a far more testing campaign. The filly by Lonhro ran fourth in last month’s Group 1 Blue Diamond at Caulfield, and when asked on her chances of heading to the Slipper, Beadman thought she was every chance.
“Her effort was good, she’s had the trip away and she’s come back here, she’s had a bit more of an arduous campaign, it’ll be up to the team if they press on. I thought the fourth filly Amercement, her run had a lot of merit given the ground she had to make up with the blinkers on, it’s very thrilling.”
