Boom Time heads up Lindsay Park’s 2018 R A Lee Stakes nominations

Surprise Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time heads up Lindsay Park’s four nominations for the Group 3 $250,000 Robert & Fay Gerard R A Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Boom Time scored at the grand odds of $51 when he won the Group 1 $3.15m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield during the 2017 Melbourne Spring Carnival for sole owner, Lindsay Park’s head trainer, David Hayes.

The six year old stayer who was bred to be a sprinter, then failed to repeat his winning performance when fifteenth to Rekindling in the Group 1 $6.25m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

Boom Time was then invited to run in the Group 1 about US$5.2 million Japan Cup (2400m) at Fuchu in Tokyo Japan on November 26 but could only manage to finish in twelfth position.

Lindsay Park co-trainer Tom Dabernig, who trains in partnership with David Hayes and his son Ben Hayes, was hoping for a first up win for Boom Time but was satisfied with his second,  with Fred Kersley in the saddle, to Tarquin in the $100,000 Living Legend R.E. ‘Mick’ Mallyon Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on May 5 and said that the Flying Spur six year old would be set for another Caulfield Cup campaign.

“(Kersley) said he got pushed around and the next thing he was pushed three deep,” Dabernig said.

“So he let him slide forward on that massive sweeping bend, which in the end proved too hard.

“It was a winning performance but unfortunately he hasn’t won.

“We’re not disappointed in the horse, just disappointed in the result but those things happen from time to time.

“It’s one that got away.”

Lindsay Park’s other three nominations among the twenty-two entries for the R A Lee Stakes are Fastnet Tempest, Pilote D’Essai and Seaburge.

Fastnet Tempest is a last start winner of the Listed $120,000 Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield on April 21 while Seaburge is getting closer to the winner’s stall with a last start second in the Listed $150,000 Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo on April 7.

Last Saturday’s Morphettville winner Manuel heads up trainer Tony McEvoy’s four nominations that also includes Calderson, Over Exposure and Temple Of Bel.

Manuel has been working his way up through the grades and his win in the $100,000 Autumn Series Final on the Morphettville Parks track on Saturday was his second win from his last three starts after taking out a 1200m BenchMark 82 Handicap at Morphettville on April 14 three runs back.

The all-conquering Darren Weir has nominated Land Of Plenty and Raw Impulse while Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher has entered the in-form Lite’N In My Veins who is the winner of his last three starts over 1600m at Morphettville.

The final field for the 2018 R A Lee Stakes will be released on Wednesday, May 16.
