Queensland Oaks Next for The Roses Betting Drifter Torvill

Trainer Clarry Conners has confirmed his class filly Torvill will target the 2018 Queensland Oaks next-up after Saturday’s The Roses and not be dropped back to a mile for next month’s Queensland Guineas.

Sydney-based Conners chases a third win in this year’s Group 2 $175,000 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) at Doomben Racecourse having prepared previous winners Invest (2012) and Dear Demi (2013).

His shot in the 2018 The Roses field is the in-form Torvill, the daughter of Not A Single Doubt coming off a lead-up win in the Listed The Bracelet (1630m) at the track on April 28.

Conners was in the United States for that win, but has returned just in time to watch his filly attempt successive wins in The Roses on Doomben 10,000 Day.

Last time out she and jockey James Orman overcame a wide barrier 15 of 15 draw and Torvill, who Orman rides again, has work to do from another outside alley in The Roses jumping from gate 15 of 16.

“Everything is fine with her and my staff are very happy,” Conners told Racing Queensland on Friday.

“I’m a bit disappointed she’s drawn wide again and I’m hoping the track won’t be too wet.

“Jimmy Orman rode her work this week and he’s very pleased with her recovery.”

The latest The Roses odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Torvill at an easing price of $5.50 after she previously opened favourite.

It is now the progressive Chris Waller-trained Youngstar ($3.40) sitting top of The Roses betting as she shoots for a third win on the trot from a gun barrier four draw.

All going to plan and Conners has confirmed Torvill for a step-up in distance back at Doomben on May 26 for a shot at the Group 1 $500,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m).

Conners has also prepared dual Queensland Oaks winners with Zagaila (2003) and Allow (2006) both saluting in the race over 2400m at Eagle Farm.

He believes that the shortened Oaks distance at Doomben in 2018 (2200m) will better suit Torvill than dropping her back to a mile for the Group 2 $350,000 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on June 9.

“The Queensland Guineas was an option if I didn’t think she’d run 2000 metres but after winning The Bracelet but she’ll definitely go for the Oaks,” Conners, who has prepared a total of five Group 1 Brisbane winners going back to his 1993 Queensland Derby champion Air Seattle, said.

The Roses – Queensland Oaks double has been completed just twice since the former’s inauguration in 1996 with Ethereal (2001) and Scarlett Lady (2011) the only fillies to win both races.

Pre-field Queensland Oaks odds list Torvill at $8, just behind Youngstar ($7), with this afternoon’s The Roses results to affect the all-in markets on the Group 1 in a fortnight.
