JHB Carr Stakes 2018 Field & Betting: So Far Sokool Top Fancy

The early money is coming for the Archie Alexander-trained filly So Far Sokool to make it back-to-back wins in the 2018 JHB Carr Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The daughter of Showcasing is one of 13 remaining three-year-old fillies in the field for this weekend’s Group 3 $150,000 The Hong Kong Jockey Club JHB Carr Stakes (1400m) after the early scratching of the widely-drawn Mandylion (14).

Drawn well in barrier four with top hoop Blake Shinn in the saddle, So Far Sokool makes her Sydney race debut at start number 13 on the back of a four length romp home in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) on April 7.

Boasting a top record over the 1400m distance (5:1-3-0), Saturday sees her rise in grade but the bookies are taking no chances as she leads JHB Carr Stakes betting at $3.90 and firming at Ladbrokes.com.au.

There are a further three single-figure fancies in the latest JHB Carr Stakes odds including perennial runner-up Problem Solver ($5) coming off three straight second place finishes.

After winning first-up at the Gold Coast back in mid-January, Gerald Ryan’s well-bred daughter of Hinchinbrook returned to Sydney for the trio of placings including most recently crossing just a neck off Houtzen in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) on April 7.

That big run on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ puts Problem Solver right in the mix for Saturday’s race going up in distance, the filly drawn in barrier seven after a tough run from gate 13 of 16 last time out.

The PJ Bell Stakes produced last year’s JHB Carr Stakes winner Raiment who improved on a lead-up seventh, form that can be franked again this season.

The next best in betting at an equal $6 each for the win are Manicure for Godolphin and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Moss Trip drawn in gates five and two respectively.

Last year’s winning trainer James Cummings chases more JHB Carr Stakes success with two chances in Saturday’s field, the spring’s Moonee Valley Classic winner Banish ($11) out in barrier 13 with Hugh Bowman of Winx fame aboard and the better-fancied Manicure.

Banish is a double-figure chance to post her first win since the mile success in Group 2 class at The Valley last October, her two runs this time in unplaced including the second last (15th) in the PJ Bell Stakes.

Manicure meanwhile has gotten her autumn off to a better start when fourth to I Am Excited at Rosehill in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) before the PJ Bell Stakes second when tied for the placing with Problem Solver.
