A smart field of Surround Stakes – Coolmore Classic bound three-year-old fillies do battle in Saturday’s Light Fingers Stakes 2018, betting tips and updated odds on the Royal Randwick clash detailed below.
There are 13 remaining hopefuls in this year’s Group 2 $200,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), the set weights sprint running as the eighth on a nine-race Apollo Stakes Day card, after the withdrawal of Chris Waller’s undefeated filly Charlayne (13).
Despite the size of the field, there are only two runners under $10 in the latest Light Fingers Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with the red hot favourite Alizee ($1.80) and the Kiwi visitor Melody Belle ($4.80).
Glyn Schofield rides Sepoy filly Alizee first-up from a nice barrier four draw, the James Cummings-trained bay a Group 1 winner at the track having saluted in the Flight Stakes over a mile last September.
Melody Belle is drawn wider out in double-digits (12), but the bookies are keeping the in-form daughter of Commands safe in the markets for her first run down under since the unplaced 10th to Capital Gain in Brisbane’s Group f1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) last June.
So will the best two fillies in Light Fingers Stakes betting salute or is there value tipping an upset from the likes of the now Edward O’Rourke-trained Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic ($12) who can handle her wide barrier draw or even Kris Lees’ returning black-type winner Yulong Xingsheng ($21)?
#3 Alizee ($1.80)
Good fillies perform well in this race and an odds-on favourite like Alizee is hard to bet against. She won the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), a race last year’s Light Fingers Stakes winner Global Glamour also took out, before the forgivable third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) when two lengths off Aloisia. Back in Sydney fresh from a nice barrier with Glyn Schofield retaining the ride, Alizee can return to winning form. Nice lead-up trial when second to star sprinter Redzel, a hit-out that saw her go past the world’s best mare Winx.
Good price offered first-up for last autumn’s Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic. Her previous trainer’s foreman has taken over and knows the daughter of Husson well. Before the Slipper second, Frolic beat the winner She Will Reign in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m). She is two-from-three at Randwick and has been impressive in her recent Rosehill trials. Proven from wide barriers so ignore the gate.
One of the roughie hopes, this Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of All Too Hard is rising in grade for this after her excellent spring that saw her win two of her four opening career starts. Proven up to 1400m and will be better getting back out to that distance, but first-up the 1200m should suit at Randwick where she has winning form, especially after a nice lead-up trial for second to Miss Gunpowder earlier in the month.
Whether you’re backing or sacking the fillies in our Light Fingers Stakes 2018 tips, lock in the right price this Apollo Stakes Day through Ladbrokes.com.au.
