A line-up of potential 2018 Golden Slipper Stakes-bound fillies take to the Rosehill track on Saturday in the Widden Stakes as part of Expressway Stakes Day.
Due to run as Rosehill Race 3 at 2:00pm (AEDT), this season’s Group 3 $150,000 Widden Stakes (1100m) field has attracted a promising line-up of 13 two-year-old fillies.
The bulk of the youngsters are eyeing a return to the track on March 24 for a shot at the iconic Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m).
The shortest-priced of the Widden Stakes fillies in futures Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Chris Waller-trained Fiesta at $34 to win the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
Drawn well in barrier four for her first-up run on the weekend with Kerrin McEvoy to ride, I Am Invincible filly Fiesta has had two previous starts for two top three efforts during the spring.
On debut she was just over a length beaten by Satin Slipper at Randwick in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) before her second to Legislation at the same track and distance on October 21.
Fiesta has trialled twice since in January at Rosehill Gardens including a 900m winning hit-out leading up to the Widden Stakes.
At a current quote of $51 in all-in Golden Slipper Stakes odds and out to make a good impression first-up on the weekend is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Bold Arial, another daughter of I Am Invincible.
Waterhouse boasts an incredible six previous Golden Slipper victories and in 2018 chases her first in the classic since Vancouver (2015).
Bold Arial was somewhat disappointing on debut when 10th in the Gimcrack Stakes, but her subsequent second in a 900m Rosehill trial on January 22 showed promise.
The best-tried filly in this autumn’s Widden Stakes field having her fifth run on Saturday is the Gary Portelli-trained Secret Lady.
Portelli won last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes with boom filly She Will Reign (2017) and has a credible contingent on way to the feature again this season.
Secret Lady was scratched from last Saturday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Preview in Melbourne due to a wide alley and has had similar bad luck for her Sydney assignment a week on.
Last seen crossing fifth to Sunlight in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight back, Choisir filly Secret Lady will jump from gate 12 of 13 in the Widden Stakes.
Jockey Jason Collett is booked for his first ride under race conditions on Secret Lady who has winning form at Rosehill having saluted in November’s Golden Gift.
Along with Secret Lady the only other non-maiden in the race is the John Thompson-trained Into The Abyss who has the outside alley to contend with on Saturday.
A $67 shot for the Golden Slipper Stakes 2018, the Foxwedge filly saluted on Boxing Day at Randwick over 1000m by over a length and caught the eye again in a subsequent trial over 745m this week when second at the same track.
