Sydney horseman Edward O’Rourke is eyeing a Light Fingers Stakes 2018 return next February for the autumn’s Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic.
Formerly with Michael Freedman, the daughter of Husson hasn’t raced since crossing five lengths back seventh to Invader at Randwick on April 1 in the Group 1 $1 million ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
That run followed a smart autumn campaign that included wins in the Restricted Listed $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m) and Group 2 $300,000 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
After defeating the Gary Portelli-trained She Will Reign in the Reisling Stakes, Frolic backed-up in the world’s richest race for juveniles.
In the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) it was She Will Reign first past the post, Frolic running 2.3 lengths back second on the Heavy (10) Rosehill track.
After the Sires’ Produce Frolic underwent minor surgery to remove bone chips and recently returned to the stable.
O’Rourke indicated that Frolic was still around four weeks from an official trial and that the Group 2 $200,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 17 shaped-up as a nice resuming run.
“She’s back in and is coming along nicely and will trial towards the end of January,” he told Racing NSW.
Another former top-line filly ready to return to racing for O’Rourke is From Within, previously prepared by Sydney’s best Chris Waller.
The Not A Single Doubt filly has had four career starts including her distant fifth to Frolic in the Reisling Stakes and last start fourth to Property in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on April 1.
It was her debut that stirred up early hype back on New Year’s Eve 2016 at Canterbury when From Within saluted as the $1.50 favourite over subsequent ATC Sires’ Produce champion Invader (2nd) and Chauffeur (3rd) whose next run produced the second to Houtzen in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.
From Within, who suffered a splint bone injury soon after joining O’Rourke, is down to return this Saturday at Randwick on Villiers Stakes Day entered for a Benchmark 70 Handicap over 1100m.
She has had two November trials at the track, most recently posting a win over 1050m, and will be kept to lower grade targets early on this campaign.
“My main aim is to get her back on track and going the right way,” O’Rourke said.
“There’s a fair bit of pressure. The owners have some expectations for her but pressure is a good thing, it makes you perform.
“We are down a lot in grade and that will be a big difference to us so hopefully we can get a win on the board.”
