One of the biggest fields at Ladbrokes Park on Saturday is assembled for the 2017 Eclipse Stakes, betting tips and updated odds on the staying clash found below.
Running as Sandown Race 9 at 5:20pm (AEDT), 14 gallopers are in the mix for this year’s Group 3 $150,000 Eclipse Stakes (1800m).
Despite the size of the field, just three runners sit under double-figures in the Eclipse Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Leading the way at $4 and drawn the rails is the Darren Weir-trained Makfi entire Raw Impulse who was luckless going down by a nostril flare over the Flemington mile on Emirates Stakes Day.
On the quick back-up, Raw Impulse looks well-suited to the step-up in distance boasting a strong 1800m record (3:2-0-1) and also drops 2.5kg to 56kg putting him right in the mix to atone if he doesn’t get caught-up on the inside.
Payroll ($6) is the second shortest in the Eclipse Stakes odds, the consistent Richard Laming-trained mare runner-up at Flemington last Saturday in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m).
There’s also support for the Charlie Appleby-trained Godolphin raider Kidmenever who gets the chance to atone on the horror Australian debut when eighth in the Group 2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes (2400m).
So will the best in betting get the job done on Saturday or is there value tipping an upset Eclipse Stakes result from the likes of the hulking Adelaide raider Balf’s Choice ($12) or flying Dash For Cash gelding Dodging Bullets ($10)chasing three wins on the trot?
Tipping the consistent and classy Not A Single Doubt mare Payroll to continue her good form this prep and break through with her first win of the campaign. She was third only a length off the winner at Flemington two back in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at a huge price from out wide (14 of 14) before the second to Savapinski stepping-up in distance for the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) last weekend. She’s firing and they are striking while the iron is hot, the step back 200m and the nice 54.5kg weight here with Damien Oliver booked for the ride further enhance her chances.
Good double-figure offering for this Morphettville-trained son of Written Tycoon who is in great form. A big horse with plenty of talent, he won the Seymour Cup (1600m) two back before a lead-up fourth over this distance on Melbourne Cup Day. Not all that well-weighted here, but in an open race he has claims and the form has been franked.
Symon Wilde-trained six-year-old won over 2040n by three lengths at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Eve before success in the Kyneton Cup (2000m) on November 8. Drops in distance so this might be a little sharp, but he’s flying and is one of the better weighted hopes.
