A bumper 10 race card comes to a close on Saturday at 5:45pm (AEDT) with 11 sprinters set to face off in this season’s Group 2 $400,000 Schillaci Stakes (1100m).
Sitting top of the current Schillaci Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4 and firming despite drawing the outside barrier is Holy Roman Emperor six-year-old Sheidel.
She is third-up on the weekend looking set to peak after the brave third when under a length beaten at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago behind The Everest favourite She Will Reign in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m).
Sheidel comes back in grade for the Schillaci Stakes chasing her first win since saluting at the track / distance in the autumn’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
The mare has an imposing record of three wins and a second from five starts at the Caulfield track and looks hard to beat in the short-distance race heading towards a possible return to The Valley for the Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 27.
It shapes-up as a wide open edition of the Schillaci Stakes this spring with a further six single figure fancies including fellow mare Super Cash ($7.50) from the stables of Andrew Noblet.
A five-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon, Super Cash is a first-up flyer and runs fresh on Saturday looking to add to her record of three wins and a third from four previous resuming starts.
Winner of the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield back in February defeating Group 1 winners I Am A Star and Chautauqua, the latter a key chance in The Everest race in Sydney on Saturday, Super Cash is out to atone for an unplaced run in Adelaide during the autumn.
She hasn’t raced since finishing four lengths back 10th to Secret Agenda in Morphettville’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), but is undefeated over 1100m at Caulfield (2-2-0-0).
Equal $7.50 second elect in the Schillaci Stakes odds is the rails-drawn Lankan Rupee, Mick Price’s former champion sprinter looking to return to his best after a luckless past 12 months.
The now eight-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice is a five-time Group 1 winner but hasn’t been first past the post since February of 2015 in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington.
Injuries and other setbacks have plagued his more recent form, but he did catch the eye last spring running fourth in the Darley Classic behind Malaguerra.
Other key hopes in the Schillaci Stakes field and markets include Perth raider Rock Magic ($8) who ran a nice Moir Stakes fourth first-up, the Darren Weir-trained WA expat First Among Equals ($8) racing in Melbourne for the first time and returning sprinter Illustrious Lad ($8.50).
