A host of this weekend’s headline The Everest horses in Sydney feature in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes 2017 first acceptances for the Cox Plate Eve spring feature at Moonee Valley later this month.
Down from 60 at nomination stage, there are 39 sprinters still heading towards a run in the Group 1 $1 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) under the lights at The Valley on Friday October 27 following first acceptances this week.
The feature race of the Moonee Valley night race meeting contested the evening before Winx shoots for a third Cox Plate victory, the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes is tipped to attract a number of the same gallopers running at Randwick this Saturday in the inaugural edition of the $10 million The Everest (1200m).
The top three in The Everest betting at Ladbrokes.com.au are all still in Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes contention including the Gary Portelli-trained favourite She Will Reign.
The Golden Slipper Stakes winning filly is drawn at treat for the weight-for-age event his weekend and could also prove hard to beat in the Manikato Stakes already proven at the tight Moonee Valley track.
The three-year-old daughter of Manhattan Rain ran first-up at The Valley on September 29 and impressed with her Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) success.
Should she go onto the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes she will be out to be the first three-year-old to win the race since Sepoy in 2011.
She Will Reign though is only rated an $8 chance in futures Manikato Stakes odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au, the top in betting being equal $6 fancies Chautauqua and Vega Magic.
Both proven Group 1 winners take on the filly in The Everest in Sydney on way to a possible Moonee Valley run in the Manikato Stakes 2017.
Chautauqua is an evergreen veteran prepared by Team Hawkes and triple TJ Smith Stakes winner at Randwick.
He has been to Moonee Valley on four previous occasions for two wins including the 2015 Manikato Stakes, a race he finished two lengths back seventh behind Rebel Dane in when unsuccessfully defending his title in 2016.
Vega Magic meanwhile is a former WA sprint star now prepared by Lindsay Park, the five-year-old Lope De Vega five-year-old last seen winning Caulfield’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
He is yet to race in Sydney ahead of The Everest or be tested at Moonee Valley leading up to the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes, but is still being kept safe in betting for both spring feature races.
The other best fancied in pre-field Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes odds following this week’s first acceptances include In Her Time, Malaguerra and the another The Everest fancy on Saturday Redzel.
Newcastle’s Benjamin Smith trains Time Thief five-year-old In Her Time who is looking to be the first Manikato Stakes winning mare since Sea Siren (2012).
She put the writing on the wall for a big spring first-up on September 30 in Sydney winning the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) on Epsom Handicap Day.
Malaguerra is a six-year-old son of Magnus who has raced at Moonee Valley three times including his Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) win over Black Heart Bart this summer.
The dual Group 1 winner hasn’t won a race since however and was last seen crossing two lengths back seventh to She Will Reign in the Moir Stakes.
Redzel meanwhile is in flying form having won his past four starts, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained galloper having had just the one The Valley run for a second last (8th) in last year’s Moir Stakes.
