Trainer Stuart Webb has paid final acceptances for his progressive filly Coral Coast to possibly take on the boys in Saturday’s 2017 Spring Champion Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
The in-form daughter of So You Think is one of just 10 final acceptors for the final elite level of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the Group 1 $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) set to run as Randwick Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEDT).
Drawn barrier six, which produced Vanbrugh (2015) for his win two years ago, Coral Coast was last seen backing up from a maiden win at Benalla by two lengths over the mile to run third to Ace High in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).
The Gloaming Stakes has produced more Spring Champion Stakes winners than any other lead-up including five of the past seven.
This weekend the David Payne-trained High Chaparral colt Ace High will be out to do the Gloaming Stakes – Spring Champion Stakes double recently completed by the aforementioned Vanbrugh (2015), Complacent (2013) and It’s A Dundeel (2012).
Coral Coast meanwhile will be out to turn the tables on the Gloaming Stakes winner Ace High as well as the Godolphin-raced runner-up Sanctioned in the Spring Champion Stakes field.
Webb also has his filly entered for a possible run down south on the same day against her own kind in the Group 2 $200,000 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m), but is leaning towards the big one in Sydney.
“I had her entered for Flemington but am leaning to Randwick,” he told AAP.
Last season Yankee Rose made history as the sole Spring Champion Stakes winning filly in the race’s history, a feat Webb hopes Coral Coast can emulate in an upset on the weekend.
The Victorian horseman, who prepared Yosei for her 2010 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes success, has already forgiven Coral Coast for her Gloaming Stakes run for third when just over five lengths beaten believing she’s the improver heading into Saturday’s rematch.
“She didn’t get round the home turn at Rosehill,” he said.
“If she had come around the bend better she would have been closer so I’m sure the big Randwick track will suit her better.
“She is a big strong filly and I have no issues with her taking on the males again.
“We will accept with her and make a final decision when we see the field but I’m pretty sure she will go back to Sydney.
“It’s a good race for her heading to the VRC Oaks.”
Spring Champion Stakes favourite Ace High meanwhile targets the VRC Derby during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and jumps from barrier four on the weekend with Tye Angland retaining the ride.
Sanctioned is in the outside barrier (10 of 10), while the Chris Waller-trained Tangled is drawn in gate two out to improve on a fourth in last Saturday’s Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) at the track.
Snitzel colt Tangled is down from 60.5kg that run, when beaten only half a length, to 56.5kg and faces the Dulcify runner-up Dissolution from the Team Hawkes stable once more with the latter drawn the rails in the Spring Champion Stakes.
