2017 Golden Pendant Results: Daysee Doom Beats Dixie Blossoms

Trainer Ron Quinton enjoyed a stellar Golden Pendant 2017 result for the stable running the quinella on Golden Rose Day with in-form mares Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms.

Shy from dead-heating the race, Quinton celebrated the best possible result in this year’s Group 2 $400,000 Golden Pendant (1400m) as his duo held out the Chris Waller-trained favourite Omei Sword (3rd).

“It’s a very pleasing result and only would’ve been better if it was a dead heat,” Quinton said post-win.

“Both in great form and hopefully it’s onward and upwards.”

With the fitness edge going into the lucrative Rosehill Gardens showdown was Daysee Doom ($5.50), the ultra-consistent Domesday five-year-old second-up after her close third to Ravi in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago.

Quinton’s apprentice and the mare’s regular rider Andrew Adkins retained the mount and was rewarded for his cool performance.

“She’s an incredible mare, she always puts her best in for me, I love her to bits,” he said.

The young jockey remained calm aboard the winter’s Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic winner after Daysee Doom found herself three wide with no cover.

Adkins didn’t panic however and let the mare roll along at her own pace, third off the pace set by the expected front runner Sweet Redemption.

“I was three deep but the pace was on,” he said.

“I didn’t want to put any more pressure on. She was travelling well and she was comfortable.”

Her stablemate Dixie Blossoms, last seen running fourth to Deploy in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m), meanwhile travelled further back in running third last with Corey Brown back on the five-year-old daughter of Street Sense.

Waller’s top fancy Omei Sword got the ideal run, tucked away in fourth on the inside, while Brown started to move up into a mid-field position aboard the autumn’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes third placegetter Dixie Blossoms.

Omei Sword got every chance to atone for her two unplaced runs this time in as she got up on the fence once they were on the straight.

Daysee Doom however moved up to take the lead, while Dixie Blossoms was starting to really rocket home late looking just shy of peak fitness.

“She balanced up well and showed that turn of foot that she can have,” Adkins said of the Golden Pendant winner.

“I was confident the whole way up the straight that she would hold on.

“She’s a super mare.”

In the end Daysee Doom had a neck to spare over Dixie Blossoms ($7) on the line, while Omei Sword ($4.20) rounded out the Golden Pendant trifecta in third.

Quinton said the two mares would likely face off again at Royal Randwick on October 7 in the $150,000 Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) before heading south to chase the riches on offer during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

“I hate having to put them in against each other but sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” Quinton said.

“I’ll probably run them in the Angst at Randwick over the mile then we might go to Melbourne.”

A likely target for the duo should they continue to race in good form is Flemington’s Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) run on Victoria Derby Day, November 4.
