Trainer Gerald Ryan is thrilled with the condition of rising three-year-olds Menari and Trapeze Artist following impressive trials at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday morning.
Menari made an impressive debut to racing when he beat a classy field to the line in the TAB Rewards Plate (1100m) on January 14th, before making a commendable transition to black type company when he ran on to finish second behind Pariah in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m), despite being held up.
Resuming in March for fifth in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m), the Snitzel colt was third past the post in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), but was relegated to fourth after it was confirmed that he had inhibited the run of Tulip.
Having led in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) before fading late to finish tenth, Ryan told AAP that he believes that Menari might be an out-and-out sprinter and will consider a berth in the 2017 Golden Rose (1400m) following a couple of lead-in runs.
“Menari is likely to go to the Rosebud and the San Domenico Stakes before we look at the Golden Rose,” Ryan said.
“I think he might be a sprinter so we’ll decide after his first couple of runs whether we step him up to the 1400 metres.”
Trapeze Artist also debuted for a smart win in early February, but faded late in the Chris Toogood Handicap (1200m) to finish fourth.
Responding with a smart win in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m), the son of Snitzel placed a credible sixth in the Golden Slipper, before ending his campaign third in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Ryan confirmed that the Golden Rose is the major target for Trapeze Artist and is confident that the race will suit him to the ground.
“Trapeze Artist will be on a path to the Golden Rose starting with the Up And Coming Stakes and the Run To The Rose,” Ryan said.
Menari is currently considered a $15 chance in early 2017 Golden Rose betting markets.
