Ron Quinton’s last start Winter Dash winner Boss Lane is up in class this week as one of the key contenders in Wednesday’s 2017 Ramornie Handicap field at Grafton Racecourse.
The headline attraction on Day 1 of the Grafton Cup Carnival, this season’s $160,000 Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) has attracted a capacity field of 16 sprinters plus four emergencies.
Drawn in barrier nine, into eight with the spares coming out, is one of the sure-to-be favourites in Ramornie Handicap betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Boss Lane.
The six-year-old son of Dubawi enjoyed a win over the distance at his home Randwick track on June 24 carrying 56kg to victory ahead of his Grafton debut where apprentice Andrew Atkins retains the ride.
Boss Lane rises to 57.5kg, but still shapes-up as a big hope in the popular winter sprint feature.
Heading the Ramornie Handicap field and weights this season is the Brett Cavanough-trained The Monstar (59.5kg) who is no stranger to carting the big kilos.
Two back the California Dane gelding from Scone had 57.5kg on his back to run home by nearly six lengths in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (10) Randwick track.
He then rose to 59.5kg in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at Rosehill on July 1 finishing just a half-length second to Gold Symphony who had 56.5kg on his back.
Still getting in okay in the weights for Wednesday, The Monstar also sees the Grafton course for the first time and will enjoy getting back to his pet distance of 1200m but would prefer the give out of the ground.
Drawn a treat in barrier two is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained mare Flippant, a well-bred four-year-old daughter of Hinchinbrook ready to take on the boys second-up.
She finished a credible fifth to Burning Passion when resuming at Doomben on June 24 in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) under 55.5kg.
A multiple Group 2 placegetter back in February, Flippant is in on the same kilos for the Ramornie Handicap and benefits from the good draw with Larry Cassidy coming on for the ride.
Team Snowden have also accepted for Snitzel three-year-old Calanda in the Ramornie Handicap 2017 field.
The youngster handled open-age company last time out winning over 1100m at Rosehill at the start of the month and only goes up a kilo to Wednesday’s 54kg minimum.
Calanda jumps from one on the outside of his stablemate in barrier three and has Flippant’s last start hoop Jim Byrne booked for the ride.
The rails run meanwhile belongs to the returning Desleigh Forster-trained Someday, the rising nine-year-old out to break a winning drought that goes back to his Brisbane Handicap (1600m) success in Doomben way back in 2013.
James Cummings’ flying Commands four-year-old Badajoz had opposite luck in the Ramornie Handicap barriers, the last start Sunshine Coast winner right out in gate 17 coming into 13 at best.
