The 2017 Sunshine Coast Guineas is one of the key winter racing features running on Caloundra Cup Day this weekend, the latest odds and our insider betting tips on the three-years-old mile showdown found below.
Running as Caloundra Race 8 at 4:32pm (AEST) the first three emergencies in the $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) have all earned a call-up after the early scratching of Top Of The Range (19), Faraway Town (18) and Dontpokethetiger (6).
Updated Sunshine Coast Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Acatour ($3.50) who is out to improve on a luckless fifth in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich on June 17.
The Sebring colt was held-up for a run and only defeated a length, getting the chance to atone this weekend stretching out to a mile that he won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) over in the wet at Randwick back in April.
The big danger according to the current Sunshine Coast betting markets paying $4.60 and firming is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained My True Love.
The in-form Fastnet Rock filly has run top two in her three lead-up runs including the close effort behind her stablemate Prompt Response at Doomben in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m).
Prompt Response franked that form running in the money in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara last weekend and even with her nasty barrier draw, My True Love is tipped to do the same stepping up in distance at the Sunshine Coast.
So will the two top fancies battle it out for the quinella or is there an upset Sunshine Coast Guineas result pending this winter from the likes of Liam Birchley’s smart Mossman gelding Crack Me Up ($6) back against his own age here after a brave second to Religify at Doomben in black-type class, Zamex ($8.50) chasing a third win on the trot after back-to-back Rosehill victories in June or even the Chris Munce-trained Constantine ($16) who has won four of his five career starts to date?
#13 My True Love ($4.60)
Happy to stick with the gun winter form of the Tulloch Lodge fillies and tip My True Love to win even from her horror barrier. Admittedly she is going to need luck from out wide, but she is improving fast and was only a quarter-length away in the Dane Ripper. Also sees the mile for the first time since January, but she wasn’t far off under a big weight against the older mares that day. The distance should suit and she looks set to peak as the market mover.
#7 Atouchmore ($61)
Huge price offered on this Matt Kropp-trained gelding from Toowoomba, but think this gelding can surprise based on his good lead-up performances. He won over 1520m at Ipswich before a narrow home win over the mile in a Benchmark 70. This is tougher, but he’s proven at the distance and drawn well (4) where some of the key chances have more work to do. Don’t rule out at a stupid price.
#1 Acatour ($3.50)
Team Snowden-trained favourite could just prove too hard to beat and needs to be in everything. Has Jeff Lloyd aboard and can be forgiven for the tough run when blocked at Ipswich last time out. Fitter for that run, is a Group 3 winner over the distance and back against his own age is better suited here.
