New Zealand-trained three-year-old Shocking Luck will put his Queensland Derby favouritism on the line when he takes on the locals at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday in the 2017 Grand Prix Stakes.
A key feature on the Kingsford-Smith Cup Day card this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) is scheduled to run as Eagle Farm Race 5 at 2:35pm (AEST).
Originally attracting 16 final acceptors, the Grand Prix Stakes field is down to 15 hopefuls following the early scratching of Valentino Rossa (12).
The line-up is full of the standout entries for the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) run back at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 10, including Shocking Luck.
Sitting top of futures Queensland Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the nicely-bred son of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking has had two runs in Australia to date.
First-up he ran a luckless second as the beaten odds-on favourite at Ipswich over 1500m before atoning with a nearly three length win at Doomben on May 13 in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m).
Bred to go the distance he should handle the step-up to 2200m on Saturday a non-issue and has Opie Bosson retaining the ride from a gun barrier three draw in the Grand Prix Stakes.
Drawn the second outside alley but with time to overcome the wide barrier is the Darren Weir-trained Volatile Mix down in distance and grade after winning the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) a fortnight back.
The Pentire gelding scored an upset in the Morphettville feature and now chases an interstate Derby double via a lead-up Queensland run on Saturday.
Another proven Derby winner in the mix this weekend is the James Cummings-trained Prized Icon who took out the prestigious Victoria Derby at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival.
He’s yet to win a race since, but his Australian Guineas second in the autumn was good as was his lead-up second at Scone in the Inglis Guineas on May 13.
Sydney’s Chris Waller has three runners in the Grand Prix Stakes that are Queensland Derby-bound led by Veladero out wide in barrier 14 (into 13) and coming off a host of solid placings.
The latest saw him cross third to Shocking Luck in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m), before which he was runner-up to Mongolian Wolf in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Royal Randwick.
Waller has also accepted for the rails-drawn Black On Gold who comes off an 1800m win at Rosehill from the start of the month carrying 59kg and Sizzling Bullet who is in Group company for the first time since his Rosehill Guineas ninth in the mud to the Kiwi Gingernuts.
The other best out of the Rough Habit Plate backing-up this weekend is Order Again, the local Brian Smith-trained Iffraaj gelding out to turn the tables on Shocking Luck who beat him home by nearly three lengths.
Order Again had work to do from barrier 13 of 13 in the Rough Habit but he and jockey Larry Cassidy should get a gun run from gate seven this weekend.
