Stuart Webb’s Schweppes Oaks placegetter Ana Royale is back at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday set to jump favourite in the SA Fillies Classic 2017 field and betting markets.
The Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival continues this weekend with The Goodwood Day, one of the meeting’s early features being the $175,000 Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) running as Morphettville Race 4 at 2:25pm (ACST).
A capacity field of three-year-old staying fillies face off in the feature, many of which are stepping up in distance after a run in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at the track a fortnight back.
The best out of the Group 1 feature backing-up in the SA Fillies Classic is Anacheeva filly Ana Royale who finished under a length away third to the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart in the Australasian Oaks.
Ana Royale may only have winning form up to 1400m, but the bookies are taking no chances with her on Saturday and she sits top of the latest SA Fillies Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3 and firming to handle the step-up in distance.
Despite the capacity size of the field just three others sit under double-figures in the SA Fillies Classic betting markets including Parthesia ($6) for in-form Victorian trainer Darren Weir.
Weir celebrated a Group 1 win in Adelaide last Saturday preparing Volatile Mix for an upset in the SA Derby and is back with a livewire hope in the SA Fillies Classic on Saturday in Raise The Flag filly Parthesia.
She is in South Australia for the first time coming off a devastatingly close second to Dornier at Flemington in the wet on Anzac Day in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m).
Saturday’s distance looks ideal and she is drawn a treat in barrier four with Damian Lane booked for the ride.
Hot on her heels at $6.50 for the win is visiting Kiwi Savvy Dreams, the daughter of Savabeel on the short back-up after her brave fourth behind the boys in SA Derby last weekend.
Third in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) back home in March, Savvy Dreams gets another chance at a black-type win down under on Saturday over similar metres with Paul Gatt riding from a good barrier six draw.
Rounding out the single-figure fancies in the field is Smart As You Think ($8.50) jumping from barrier nine with Dwayne Dunn booked to ride the John McArdle-trained daughter of So You Think.
Smart As You Think is also an Australasian Oaks graduate having run eighth to Egg Tart, but she is tipped to appreciate getting out over further in easier company this weekend.
Other notable hopes in the mix include the Robert Smerdon’s lightly-raced Cedar Grande ($14) having her first black-type run, shock Australasian Oaks third placegetter Tiffany’s Lass ($12) who jumped at $101 odds in the Group 1 last time out and the Lindsay Park-trained Miss Strathallan ($12) from Victoria.
