Darren Weir’s consistent mare Amelie’s Star returns to Morphettville Racecourse on Robert Sangster Stakes Day this weekend chasing a win in the Queen Of The South Stakes 2017 field.
Set to run as Morphettville Race 5 on Saturday, this season’s $275,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) field has attracted a field of 14 fillies and mares.
Heading the line-up as the highest-rated of the runners is Amelie’s Star who also has a wide barrier 13 draw to overcome.
She raced at the track and two back for a close second behind Royal Rumble before a second over 1800m at Flemington on Anzac Day.
Those have been her only two runs since the spring of 2015 when the daughter of Testa Rossa enjoyed a four straight winning streak including a Group 3 over a mile and a half, before spending over a year on the sidelines.
Improving each run, Amelie’s Star shapes-up as a genuine chance to return to winning form three runs back on the weekend.
Weir has accepted for a total of four runners in the Queen Of The South Stakes field this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
Amelie’s Star will be joined by stablemates Jennio with the inside run from barrier one, in-form Ma Jones chasing a third mile win on the trot and Sebring four-year-old Turbo Miss.
Turbo Miss won the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in early March and was last seen running a brave third to Hooked as a $17 roughie in Caulfield’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on April 15.
Also drawn wide with the outside alley (14 of 14) to overcome is the flying Sue Jaensch-trained Have Another Glass chasing a fifth win on the trot.
A four-year-old daughter of Domesday, local hope Have Another Glass races at the main track at Morphettville for the first time on Saturday after back-to-back victories at the Parks course before her latest five length success at Oakbank over 1400m on April 17.
She carted 57.5kg to victory in that barnstorming win and will relish the drop back to 55kg on the weekend with apprentice Emily Finnegan continuing her association of the mare.
Also looking to extend a winning streak with success in the Queen Of The South Stakes is the Michael Kent-trained Consommateur, the lightly-raced daughter of Roc De Cambes coming off successive autumn wins.
She has had six career starts for a trio of wins, most recently saluting by nearly three lengths at Rosehill on March 18 in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m).
Other notable hopes for the Group 2 include Rocket Commander coming off a third in the City Of Adelaide Handicap from April 29, the John O’Shea-trained Circular to be ridden by Joao Moreira from barrier three and Doug Harrison’s last start Sandown-Lakeside winner Lopartega.
