A talented and capacity field of sixteen runners plus two emergencies has been confirmed for Saturday’s featured Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m); highlighted by the inclusion of several previous black type winners and some of the Autumn Carnival’s standout performers.
Second in last year’s edition of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup, Mighty Lucky has been charged with overcoming a race-high 59kgs and will require luck in running after drawing into the field in barrier 13.
Posting a career total of nine wins and fourteen minors through forty-six starts, Mighty Lucky resumed last year for a smart win in the Royal Randwick BM100 (1400m) a fortnight prior to the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.
Having progressed to sixth in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m), the son of Casino Prince capped his preparation with a smart win in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) in Brisbane.
While failing to make much of an impact through four starts in spring, Mighty Lucky is sure to have taken benefit from a first-up run for fifth in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) and will be partnered by regular hoop Chris O’Brien on Saturday.
Godolphin will launch a strong a multiple-pronged attack in the feature race after John O’Shea confirmed four runners in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup field, including Havana Cooler and Spectroscope.
Kept to light duties in 2016, Havana Cooler resumed for a smart win in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) before placing third in each of the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m), Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) and Listed McKell Cup (2400m).
Spectroscope has made only three starts in Australia so far, but is more than up to the class of the 2017 Hawkesbury Gold Cup field and should prove extremely tough to beat.
Delivering a smart field a comfortable defeat in the Schweppes BM89 (1350m) on March 11th, the son of Medaglia D’Oro repeated the effort in the Doncaster Prelude, but got too far back to make anything of an impact in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last time out.
Chris Waller has confirmed three representatives in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup field, including Vanbrugh.
A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2015 edition of the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), Vanbrugh produced a number of strong results between lacklustre runs in 2016, but won the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m) most notably on October 15th.
