The Championships Day 2 Results: Winx Wins the Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Day 2 of The Championships has drawn some of the Autumn Racing Carnival’s best horses to Royal Randwick this afternoon and four Group 1 feature races headline a particularly impressive ten race card, including Winx’s appearance in the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

We will be covering The Championships Day 2 results throughout the afternoon and we are set for a very exciting day of racing.

All the action on Day 2 of The Championships will get underway with the running of the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) for two-year-olds at 11:30am and will officially conclude after the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) is contested at 5:15pm.

The Championships Day 2 Results

Race 1 (11:30am) Listed Fernhill Handicap Results

Smart filly Whispered Secret has sustained a strong sprint in the final straight to win Race 1, the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m).

Saddled by 2016 Fernhill Handicap winner James Cummings, Whispered Secret was caught wide through the early stages of this afternoon’s race and while offered plenty of running room upon arriving in the final straight, appeared as though she’d face too great a task.

Producing a strong turn of foot, the daughter of High Chapparal pulled clear of her rivals when asked for an extra effort and withstood a late charge by Godolphin entrant Toga Picta to post her maiden black type win.

Race 2 (12:10pm Listed South Pacific Classic Results

Three-year-old Generalissimo has maintained well to the line to post a career-best win to date in this afternoon’s Listed South Pacific Classic from Rosa Carolina.

Having found an ideal position in transit off the early pace of Alliterate, the Dream Ahead gelding held a position on the rails leading intot he final straight and locked in a fierce sprint battle with Rosa Carolina; coming out on top to win the race by a short head.

In what was a race rich with value, $13 shot Siren’s Fury savaged the line to finish an impressive third.

Race 3 (12:45pm) Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes Results

Shoals has bobbed her head at the right moment to be named the 2017 Percy Sykes Stakes winner this afternoon.

Shoals was settled towards the tail of the small Percy Sykes Stakes field and received a terrific run in transit before being produced in the final straight by jockey Mark Zahra.

Locking in a fierce late battle with Formality, the Fastnet Rock filly nodded her head at the right moment to post her third career win from as many starts.

Maryore has produced a stunning turn of foot in the final straight at Randwick to secure a career-best win in the Provincial Championships Final (1400m) with ease.

Saddled by Philip Courtney in Canberra, Maryore won the Goulbourn Provincial Championships Qualifier on March 23rd and had reportedly taken plenty of benefit from the run ahead of her run this afternoon.

Having been settled at the tail of the field by Tim Clark, the daughter of Onemorenomore produced a big turn of foot when asked for an extra effort with 300m to run; flying home down the outside to beat closest rivals Better Not Blue and Ziganui by three lengths.

Race 5 (1:55pm) Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint Results

Talented colt Derryn has outsprinted Global Glamour to take out the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) this afternoon.

Derryn has undoubtedly found career-best form through a strong and consistent preparation this time and was able to find a good position in transit as Into Orbit and Global Glamour blazed the early path.

Mustering an impressive turn of foot when the field straightened, the son of Hinchinbrook was simply too good for his rivals under the conditions of the race and was an easy Arrowfield Sprint winner.

Bonneval has continued New Zealand’s outstanding record during the 2017 Autumn Carnival with a dominant win in the first Group 1 race on Day 2 of The Championships, the Australian Oaks (2400m).

Lasqueti Spirit opened a sizeable gap on her rivals leading into the final straight and kicked for home alongside Adrian Knox Stakes runner-up Perfect Rhyme, but Bonneval’s superior staying ability rose to the surface as she stormed home in the final straight to claim a three-length win.

Jockey Hugh Bowman, who takes the ride on Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes next race, delivered a typically brilliant performance aboard Bonneval to win the race.

Race 7 (3:15pm) Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Results

Equine superstar Winx has justified her resounding favouritism with a dominant win in the featured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) this afternoon.

After jumping well, Hugh Bowman settled the champion mare off the early pace set by No Doubt and The United States and the pair enjoyed a carefree run in transit.

Having pulled the mare off the fence rounding into the final straight, Bowman was a passenger as Winx strode to the lead with complete ease; jogging clear of her rivals to secure the easy six-length win from Hartnell; Sense Of Occasion again impressive when third.

Race 8 (3:55pm) Group 1 Sydney Cup Results

The 2017 Sydney Cup was officially declared a no contest after Almoonqith and Who Shot Thebarman came together in the front straight, causing an unsafe course.

Kerrin McEvoy has steered Foxplay to a maiden win at the highest level in this afternoon’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

A three-year-old filly has not won the Queen Of The Turf Stakes since 2008, but Foxplay did her chances of overcoming the trend no harm when jumping well and taking a good position close to the pace this afternoon.

Mustering an impressive turn of foot late in the race, the Foxwedge filly pulled clear late to beat a fast-finishing Zanbagh and brave Dixie Blossoms.

Race 10 (5:15pm) Group 2 Sapphire Stakes Results

Smart mare Secret Agenda has relished the soft going at Randwick this afternoon; taking out the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and officially ending Day 2 of The Championships.

Damien Oliver settled Secret Agenda off the early pace of Tempt Me Not and Thames Court, before pulling the mare wide rounding into the final straight.

Mustering a smart turn of foot, the four-year-old comfortably strode past her rivals and attacked the line for a comfortable one-length win over Missrock.
