Derryn posted an impressive win in the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) before a credible performance for eighth in last weekend’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), but was a forgotten horse in Arrowfield Sprint betting markets as punters rallied around some of his rivals.
The Hinchinbrook colt did his chances of defying the trend no harm when jumping well and taking a position within the classy field as Into Orbit, Global Glamour and Crafty Cop traded early blows on pace.
Settling into a terrific rhythm, jockey Mark Zahra elected to pull Derryn off the fence leading into the final straight and was rewarded for the decision when a gap opened and he was able to dart through towards the fore of the field.
Locking in a fierce pace battle with Global Glamour, Derryn’s real ability shone through as he savaged the line for a comfortable half-length win; Impending running on for third.
Co-trainer David Hayes was thrilled with Derryn’s performance to be crowned the Arrowfield Sprint winner and revealed a race like the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) may figure as a long range target for the colt next year.
“It was a really great win,” Hayes said after the race.
“He revelled in the conditions and it was terrific.
“They back up so well off soft ground and he’s a horse that likes the jar out of the ground, so you’ve got to take advantage of it when you get it. He’s one of the few that we’ve had who really loves the ground up here.
“I just think we source a Newmarket, or something like that.
“He’s never been far off the Group 1 level in his own age, so maybe the Newmarket next year.”
Derryn debuted to racing during the Autumn Carnival in 2016 and has subsequently posted a commendable race record of three wins and three minors, through only eleven competitive appearances.
Ladbrokes.com.au is offering the best odds on all five remaining races on Day 2 of The Championships, including an incredible $2 for Winx to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes!
