Toby Edmonds’ unbeaten filly Houtzen has work to do once again on Saturday after coming up with a wide barrier 16 draw in a capacity Golden Slipper 2017 field at Rosehill Gardens.
On Tuesday morning Racing NSW announced nineteen final acceptors for the $3.5 million Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper (1200m), the world’s richest race for two-year-olds attracting a full 16 starters plus three emergencies.
The Golden Slipper Stakes barrier draw was announced soon after and the early favourite in pre-field betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Houtzen suffered an early blow out in gate 16.
She will come into 14 if the emergencies fail to gain a run, barrier 14 last producing a Golden Slipper winner with the filly Polar Success back in 2003.
The daughter of I Am Invincible has won all four career starts to date including the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).
Edmonds opted to avoid the Heavy Randwick track last start with his filly and instead raced her at Eagle Farm on March 4 where Houtzen set a modern day weight carrying record for her age and gender carting 63kg to a four length victory over 1000m.
She will get massive weight relief in the Golden Slipper field and only has to overcome the alley to continue her winning streak.
The other favourite in Golden Slipper Stakes betting is the Gary Portelli-trained She Will Reign who also drew double-figures in barrier 13.
That will be gate 11 if the emergencies come out, which produced Mossfun for her 2014 Golden Slipper win and that is Portelli’s lucky number.
She Will Reign won her opening three career starts before she was run down by Frolic to finish second on a Heavy (9) course last time out in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m).
Portelli has two runners in the Golden Slipper field 2017 also saddling-up Single Bullet who will get back from his gun barrier three draw with Tye Angland riding.
The flying son of Not A Single Doubt only just snuck into the race with a ballot exemption for his Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) victory last Saturday at the Rosehill track.
Last year’s winning stable of Peter & Paul Snowden – Capitalist (2016) – chase back-to-back Golden Slipper Stakes victories with two runners on Saturday.
Jockey Blake Shinn gets a chance at successive victories aboard Pariah, the Redoute’s Choice colt coming off a second in the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne.
Pariah came up trumps in the 2017 Golden Slipper Stakes barrier draw with gate four, while stablemate Invader is out wider in 15 (into 13) with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride.
The Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Catchy will chase the rare Group 1 two-years-old autumn double from barrier eight – possibly into seven – on Saturday with Craig Williams on the daughter of Fastnet Rock.
Williams, who rode Miss Finland to victory in the 2006 Golden Slipper for co-trainer David Hayes, has been on Catchy for all four of her career starts.
She has won them all and heads to Sydney for the first time in the Golden Slipper.
The stable have a total of four runners in the mix with the Blue Diamond third placegetter Formality in barrier two, Magic Millions Classic third placed Madeenaty in nine and Tulip in ten.
Tulip was fourth past the post in the Blue Diamond before blitzing her Sydney debut last weekend putting nearly two lengths on her closest rival in the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).
