Flying Jess has produced the big upset on the Gold Coast this afternoon; storming home to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) at triple-figure odds.
Flying Jess was all but abandoned in betting markets in the hours leading up to jump and began the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas as a $126 chance with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
Jumping from the gates well, jockey Tye Angland elected to take a sit on Flying Jess as Arbeitsam, Global Glamour and Winning Rupert blazed the early trail.
Blocked for a run and a long way off the pace rounding onto the final straight, it appeared as though Flying Jess was out of contention, but she immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by Angland; producing a huge turn of foot to charge down Global Glamour and Eckstein on the line.
Having figured prominently throughout, odds-on favourite Winning Rupert tired in the final straight to finish outside the places in fourth.
Trainer John Moloney was ecstatic that Flying Jess was able to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and revealed that he was always confident that she would run a great race following her last start in Sydney.
“You’ve just got to be in it to win it,” Moloney said.
“We just thought we’d take our place, give her a chance and you never know what will happen on the day.
“Her run in Sydney was OK, there was nothing wrong with it. Back to the 1400m, nice gate, nice ride and we were in the finish.
“I had some thought. I know that she was 100-1, I don’t even know what she was but there was never any hope for her.
“This horse has not turned a hair. She went to Sydney, didn’t miss a beat and has turned up here and she was as cool as a cucumber.”
Angland delivered a perfectly-timed ride aboard Flying Jess to be crowned the 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner and was particularly impressed by the turn of foot that the filly produced to put away her rivals late.
“I was lucky enough to get the call-up for Prime Thoroughbreds and I’ve had some success for them, but this definitely takes the cake today,” Angland said.
“You want to be able to ride your horse to suit the race and I drew next to Winning Rupert, but he ended up two pairs in front of us.
“I always travelled strongly through the race, I was able to peel off his back up the straight the turn of foot that she showed was dynamite.”
In being confirmed the 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner, Flying Jess secured only her second career win, in what was her twelfth competitive start.
