Co-trainer Tom Dabernig has revealed that the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) is likely-to-figure as the next competitive point of call for in-form mare Hell Or Highwater.
Plenty of hype followed Hell Or Highwater through the early stages of her racing career, but the mare was unable to completely live up to expectations throughout a somewhat lacklustre 2015 racing campaign.
Citing a sharp turn in form which has delivered four wins from her five most-recent starts, Dabernig told AAP that he believes that the daughter of Not A Single Doubt has earned a return to black type company and that the Lord Stakes is a likely target.
“She found her form when we put her into blinkers and you often see when mares hit a purple patch of form they can hold it,” Dabernig said.
“She’s now a multiple city winner and we might try and get a little black type with her now.
“We might nominate for the Lord Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day but we’ll see how she pulls up and make that decision closer to the race.
“She sits on pace so it’s worth having a look at it for sure.”
Hell Or Highwater ran a credible fourth in the Listed Santa’s Magical Kingdom Stakes (1000m) on debut in November of 2014, but was unable to produce much when seventh in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) upon resuming in 2015.
Resuming September for a smart win in the Procon Developments BM64 (1400m), Hell Or Highwater faced a far-greater task in a classy Ridgeview Park Thoroughbred Stud BM70 (1600m) field on October 1st, but repeated the dose with a near-two length win.
Winning a barrier trial over 1200m at Seymour on October 25th, the mare out of Get Ready Bertie failed to match the late pace when seventh in the Red Rock Deli Plate (1700m) at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day, but returned to winning form in the Ranvet BM84 (1600m) on November 26th.
Charged with carrying 56kgs in the Hollywood Nails BM84 (1700m) at Flemington last weekend, Hell Or Highwater poked clear late to take a second-consecutive race win.
The 2016 Lord Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday December 21st.
