John Thompson’s flying mare Nieta is the short-priced favourite in Starlight Stakes 2016 betting to post her third win on the trot in Saturday’s Rosehill Gardens sprint.
Running as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:40pm (AEDT) on Festival Stakes Day, this season’s $125,000 Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) has attracted a final field of 13 sprinters.
Clear favourite in the latest Starlight Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.20 and firming is Nicconi four-year-old Nieta.
The mare comes off back-to-back Sydney wins including her big 2.8 length success over the track / distance on November 12.
In that Benchmark 78 she carried 57.5kg to victory and Joshua Parr retains the ride in the Starlight Stakes, Nieta to relish the drop back to the 54kg minimum in her maiden Black-Type test.
Occupying the second line of betting at the other end of the weight scale carrying the 59kg top weight is the Kim Waugh-trained Shiraz.
Like Nieta out in barrier 12, Waugh’s Zariz seven-year-old also has a wide alley to overcome in the far outside gate (13) on Saturday.
Jockey Brenton Avdulla is aboard the returning veteran who’s been freshened-up since a disappointing last start 11th to Redzel at Caulfield in August’s Group 3 The Heath (1100m).
During the autumn Shiraz caught the eye with a second to Griante in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and the return to his pet track at Rosehill should be a big advantage.
From six starts at the course the horse boasts four wins and two seconds and he’s also got stellar form over the short distance (12-5-3-1).
Shiraz has trialled twice ahead of his return including a recent Gosford win over 1000m by over two lengths and his form when fresh is also very hard to knock with four wins from seven first-up assignments to date.
Rounding out the single-figure hopes in the Starlight Stakes betting odds this summer are the Gerald Ryan-trained Bachman ($8), and Joe Pride’s stablemates Mr Manhattan ($9) and Kuro ($9.50).
Bachman is drawn a treat in barrier two for Tim Clark to ride the All American five-year-old second-up.
The galloper ran a brave second over the distance at Randwick on November 1 beaten only a quarter-length by Kaepernick and should improve off that, but has won just one from seven at Rosehill.
Mr Manhattan chases a third straight win after success at Warwick Farm in October and Canterbury a month later on November 5.
For his latest victory, his six from 11 career runs, the lightly-raced son of Manhattan Rain carted 60.5kg to victory and will enjoy getting back down to just 54kg on the weekend.
The fellow Pride-trained Kuro meanwhile has had three goes at Rosehill for two seconds and is back in stakes’ company for the first time since the winter.
