The punters’ pick Prompt Response posted a deserving Black-Type win on Zipping Classic Day getting the job done as the well-supported favourite at Ladbrokes Park in the Twilight Glow Stakes 2016.
Prepared by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, the talented Beneteau filly atoned for a couple of luckless runs this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival to post her second career win in the $120,000 Listed City Of Greater Dandenong Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m).
Heavy money for the progressive three-year-old saw Prompt Response start $2.70 top fancy in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, a price she more than lived up to on the track thanks to a gutsy run by her and a lovely ride from Damien Oliver.
The filly came off back-to-back Listed seconds in Melbourne, the latest of which saw her beaten by the narrowest margin by Jennifer Lynn in the Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
After that form was franked with the Twilight Glow Stakes result, Jennifer Lynn will look to do the same when she runs in the Group 3 Sandown Guineas (1600m) later on the card.
Prompt Response, who has been ultra-consistent all campaign, was one of the first to break from the barriers in the set weights plus penalties sprint for the three-year-old fillies.
She was headed by Ghenwaa and settled third then fourth on the rails, Oliver making the most from the favoured barrier two draw with the warm favourite who was up on the speed throughout.
As they cornered and hit the straight, the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Petition and her hoop Kerrin McEvoy – who had previously ridden Prompt Response for all four of her runs this campaign – started to wind up from a long way back.
With 300m to go Prompt Response hit the lead, as the Lindsay Park-trained roughie Hear The Chant started to run on strong.
Prompt Response ($2.70) held on and defeated Hear The Chant ($19) to enjoy her maiden stakes’ win, while Petition ($8) rocketed home to grab third on the outside after the lovely late run.
Oliver had the eventual Twilight Glow Stakes winner tucked in behind the front runners and rode her confidently after there were clear excuses for her two recent seconds.
“It was nice to get a good trail,” Oliver said post-win.
“They didn’t go hard and she gave a great kick and held them off.”
Stable representative Emma Pearce was full of praise for Prompt Response, who she believes will be a genuine Group horse during the upcoming Autumn Racing Carnival.
“She’s probably one of the most deserving horses in our stable to have a stakes win,” she said.
“She’s a really, really tough filly and I think you’ll see plenty more of her.
“We can step her up in grade from here and there’s plenty more wins to come.”
Stay tuned for all the latest on Prompt Response looking ahead to the autumn races in 2017, the best odds for which will be available online at Ladbrokes.com.au.
