Bondi Beach’s 2016 Melbourne Cup odds have continued to firm following Saturday’s barrier draw, and the Irish raider is now sole occupant of the fourth line of betting at a $9.50 quote.
One of four runners for Macedon Lodge in the race that stops a nation this year, Bondi Beach was available to punters at Melbourne Cup odds of $12 prior to the confirmation of a final field and barrier draw, but has continued to herald a great deal of interest after drawing the ideal barrier 5.
Bondi Beach has been a strong and consistent performer for prominent Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien and will enter the Melbourne Cup having finished outside the first three only once, through a total of ten career starts.
Owner Nick Williams was at the Melbourne Cup barrier draw on Saturday night and said that he will be surprised if Bondi Beach does not run a good race at Flemington on Tuesday afternoon.
“By all reports by Aidan, they say the horse is flying,” Williams said.
“We don’t see it every day and we’ve only been able to see it the last couple of weeks at Werribee but from what you can see, it looks pretty exciting.
“He certainly strengthened up this year – he looks a much more furnished commodity. I would be staggered if he didn’t run well.”
Bondi Beach won the Group 3 Curragh Cup (2816m) at only his third career start in June last year, and continued to impress in running second in both the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes (2414m) and Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger (2937m); ultimately booking a trip to Australia for the Melbourne.
The Galileo entire ran well in the Melbourne Cup but simply appeared too far out of his depth as a northern hemisphere three-year-old, and finished the race in the back half of the field.
Resuming this year for a dominant three length win in the Listed Martin Molony (2514m), Bondi Beach justified his clear favouritism second-up when he again made light work of a classy field to win the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes (2816m) on May 16th.
Resuming from a freshen-up for third in the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes (2414m), Bondi Beach was last seen running third in the Group 3 Enterprise Stakes (2414m) on September 10th.
Bondi Beach remains firm at 2016 Melbourne Cup odds of $9.50, or can currently be inflated to a $12 to win with the lucrative Odds Boost function at Ladbrokes.com.au!
