Sheidel has maintained a nose at death to win the Group 3 Sensis Stakes (1100m) down the famous Flemington straight this afternoon
Sheidel received the greatest market share of bets for success in the Sensis Stakes prior to jump, and jockey Joao Moreira elected to lead the mare to the outside fence after jumping well from gate 12.
An inside pack including the likes of Aunty Mo, Take Pride and Echo Gal appeared to be poking clear with 400m to run, but Sheidel immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by Moreira; pulling clear and sustaining a strong enough run to withstand a late challenge by Wild Rain and Private Secretary.
Moreira’s ride was arguably the difference in success this afternoon and the Hong Kong-based hoop was thrilled with post a win on Sheidel on Derby Day 2016.
”It’s great to be here and winning races,” Moreira said.
“She won the race at the start, she was just too fast out and obviously I wasn’t told to be out in front, but she was left in front by herself easy.
“When I asked for her, she responded very well and showed off what she’s capable of doing.”
Co-trainer David Hayes was thrilled with Sheidel’s ability to maintain to the line this afternoon and revealed that she will likely back up in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington next weekend.
“We’re thrilled with her,” Hayes said.
“She’s a mare who wins more than she loses and he is a jockey who wins more than he loses, so they’re a good combination.
“She’s just a little fighter. A couple of those losses she’s had with me she’s been genuinely unlucky.
“I think she’s a Group 1 mare and she’ll probably get her chance at the end of the week to see if she is.
“We’ll see how she pulls up, but if we’re happy with her we’ll certainly look at it (Darley Classic).”
A former Perth galloper, Sheidel has undoubtedly found career-best form since transferring to the care of the Lindsay Park operation this year.
In being crowned the 2016 Sensis Stakes winner, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor has now posted a career total of fourteen wins and five minors through only twenty-four competitive starts.
