Capitalist Could be Saved for 2016 Darley Classic

Co-trainer Peter Snowden is yet to confirm whether the stable’s Golden Slipper winner Capitalist will line-up in this weekend’s Coolmore Stud Stakes or be saved for Saturday week’s Darley Classic 2016 against the older sprinters.

Last Friday night the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Written Tycoon colt was scratched from the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), subsequently won in an upset by Rebel Dane, due to a wet Moonee Valley track just an hour before jump.

The $3.5 million earner, best known for his Golden Slipper success as a two-year-old in Sydney during the autumn, is now in the nominations for the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on VRC Derby Day.

Snowden prepared the star Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Sepoy (2011) for his success five years ago, but said a decision on whether or not Capitalist would line-up in this year’s edition would be made in the next day or two.

“That’s something I have to weigh up today or tomorrow. But whatever way he goes, he’ll be competitive,” he told Racing Victoria on Monday.

If not the Coolmore against a field of fellow three-year-old, Capitalist will race on Emirates Stakes Day the following Saturday in an open-age field for the $1 million Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

No three-year-old has won the Darley Classic since the filly Pharein (1999), and she is the only to do so in over 30 years.

Snowden meanwhile has one Darley Classic win on the record with Mental (2012) when head trainer for the then Darley operation – now Godolphin.

Pre-field Coolmore Stud Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the nominated youngsters are led by Mick Price’s Moir Stakes winner Extreme Choice ($3.20) and the Team Hawkes-trained Schillaci Stakes winner Star Turn ($3.60).

Capitalist pays $11 in the futures Coolmore Stud Stakes betting markets, and is currently installed a similar price ($13) in all-in Darley Classic odds.

The Snowden camp will still be represented in the Coolmore Stud Stakes field on Saturday even without Capitalist, the undefeated Russian Revolution their other hopeful.

To date the smart son of Snitzel has won all four of his career runs, including the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) first-up in Sydney on October 1.

The colt is yet to race at Flemington, but won Caulfield’s Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) back in mid-August.

Randwick’s Roman Consul Stakes has produced the past three Coolmore Stud Stakes champions all prepared by Sydney’s best Chris Waller.

Zoustar (2013) and Brazen Beau (2014) both completed the double Russian Revolution currently pays $8 to do again this weekend, while Japonisme (3rd in 2015) improved on a Roman Consul placing to score an upset Coolmore Stud Stakes result 12 months ago as a $20 outsider.
